To start planning your vacation to Muang La Resort
Located in the gloriously untouched hills of northern Laos, Muang La Resort is a beautiful boutique retreat that provides access to one of the most untouched and pristine regions of Southeast Asia. It's one of Laos' hidden gems.
Muang La Resort sits in the wilds of northern Laos, home to gloriously green hills dotted with untouched hill-tribe villages. It's easily one of the best places to experience and learn about authentic hill-tribe cultures in Southeast Asia, as the area is largely unexplored by tourism.
The resort itself is perched on a wild river flanked by dense jungle. It's an idyllic and very peaceful setting; the striking views are worth the journey alone. The 10 rooms, spread through 5 villas, are built using traditional Laotian techniques, however they are modern, colorful and contemporary inside. With polished wooden floors, sleek white walls, designer furniture, jewel colored textiles and terrazzo bathrooms, Muang La easily offers the most spoiling rooms north of Luang Prabang.
When staying in Muang La, most guests will spend their time exploring the area. Trekking, cycling, cookery classes and 4X4 jeep safaris are among the most popular excursions available from the resort. If you're lucky you might catch the Akha tribal market as well! For those who enjoy a bit of pampering there are wonderful natural hot water pools as well as a spa room for a relaxing massage.
Despite being so remote, Muang La Resort offers some of the best service and food in Laos; think 5 course Laos/French fusion food in the evenings and quality picnic lunches when you are out exploring.
Getting there isn't too difficult to either; there's a flight from Vientiane to nearby Oudomxay, it combines easily with Nong Khiaw and it's approximately a 5-6 hour drive and scenic boat journey directly from Luang Prabang.
We feel that Muang La Resort really is a one-of-a-kind property that opens up a glorious part of Laos. It's also ideal for adventure enthusiasts who enjoy a slice of comfort and those interested in hill-tribe cultures.
Each room is named after the hill-tribe communities that are local to the area; they all share a similar design of brightly colored fabrics and high vaulted ceilings. There are 6 Garden View rooms in total that are spacious, clean and very comfortable. Each overlooks the tropical gardens and are adorned with woven fabrics and boasting recently renovated bathrooms. The 4 River View rooms are a little larger and have large balconies with fantastic views. These also have large terrazzo bathrooms. Katou and Lamet are ideal for families as these have a shared lounge area with a coffee machine that overlooks the river. These are also fantastic options for honeymooners as they are furthest away from reception, giving couples a touch more privacy.
Families and children are more than welcome at Muang La but we feel it's particularly suitable for families with teenagers who love the outdoors. For a small additional charge, the hotel can provide baby cots and extra rollaway beds if needed.
There's a wonderful restaurant that spills out onto a deck overlooking the river, serving breakfast, lunch and a wonderful a-la-carte dinner. There's also 2 natural thermal pools and a small massage room.

This resort completely blew my mind location, rooms, staff, food, it really exceeded expectations especially given its remote location. I found it very hard to fault it. If river view rooms are available these are a must! Although the garden view rooms are the same size, the view is amazing and there is so much local activity on the river, you can be entertained for hours just watching the going ons. There is a hidden pool on the island opposite accessed by a rather wobbly monkey bridge which is all part of the fun. There is also a bar here and a watch tower which is a great place to watch the sun set with a G & T in hand. The hot water spring baths were almost too hot but must be very good for you combined with a green tea. The food here is the best Ive had in Laos, they have a taster menu each evening using the freshest ingredients and it was delicious.
