With moderate winters and summers, this is a perfect place to visit in the Spring, Summer and Fall. A spring in France provides the right climate for the picturesque green hills with pretty flowers and calm weather. April showers occur on occasion, but it is nothing an umbrella cannot handle. Spring and summer are especially lovely because of the beauty that these seasons bestow upon the French countryside, however, the Fall months make travel and site seeing very doable - even with the occasional drizzle and chillier conditions in the evenings as the end of the Fall draws in.

Domaine des Etangs sits on a luxury estate in a rural setting close to Bodeaux and Limoges. The hotel is beautifully set in 2,500 acres of natural forest and ponds, offering a wonderful country retreat with a spa on site.
The estate is the perfect place to get away from it all, leaving technology behind to take time to get back to nature and enjoy the great outdoors. Set out on foot, by bike or perhaps in a canoe to explore the extensive grounds, where you’re surrounded by woodland, vegetable gardens, ponds and rivers, as well as the estate’s prize collection of Limousine cows. Inside, retreat to the spa where you can soak tired limbs in the Thermal Bath, take a swim in the pool or enjoy a massage.
Domine des Etangs has an impressive display of artwork, often making you forget you are in a country retreat hotel rather than a refined gallery. The main chateau emulates the charm of a family home, dating back to the 11th Century, where you’ll find 7 vast suites and bedrooms. The remaining bedrooms and cottages are spread among the estate, some with their own pontoons so you can take to the water directly from your dwelling. The cottages are perfect for a family or group stay, offering a warm and cosy farmhouse atmosphere and up to 5 bedrooms with large sitting rooms and inviting fireplaces.
Dyades is the hotel’s restaurant, lead by renowned chef Loic Lecoin. The restaurant is inspired by the word “dyad”, meaning the marriage of two complementary ideas and principles, fusing both tradition and sophistication. The chefs here work closely with the local gardeners and make the most of the food available on the estate, collecting crayfish from the Moulde river, which winds through the estate and picking fruit and vegetables from the extensive gardens.
This hidden gem is an excellent place to explore the French countryside and an great base to explore the surrounding area of charming french towns and rolling vineyards.
The Domaine des Etangs estate features a collection of 17 spacious rooms and suites in the main houses with 6 farmhouse cottages dotted around the estate, offering between 1 and 5 bedrooms. Some rooms can be taken together for group or multi-generation stays so there is plenty of choice here, depending on your preferences.
|The Farmhouse Cottages||
The cosy farmhouse cottages offer the perfect escape with spacious lounges and roaring fireplaces, making them the ideal space to relax as a group or family and enjoy quality time together. The smallest cottage has just 1 bedroom and the largest 5 bedrooms, accommodating up to 10 guests together.
The enchanting prestige suites have their own unique qualities, Lune and Hiver are rustically-styled with exposed brick walls and wooden-beamed ceilings, whereas Jupiter is modern in style with fresh white walls and a hidden dressing room. Each suite is extremely spacious with a sitting area or lunge and a separate bathroom with bathtub.
Children are more than welcome at Domaine des Etangs and the large playground has playhouses, trampolines and ziplines, where young guests can play to their heart’s content. The hotel also organizes a selection of creative and educational workshops including cooking, baking, drawing and horse riding.
There is an impressive array of facilities on offer here with a spa and fitness center, a thermal bath, an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and vegetable gardens all contained within the grounds of the beautiful estate.
The extensive grounds make for the perfect natural playground where you can enjoy long walks or bike rides through the protected woodland. Within the grounds you’ll also find a unique floating tennis court and ponds where it is possible to fish. You can also try your hand at horse riding, falconry, cooking classes and wine tasting.
If you can tear yourself away from the estate, close by you’ll find the town of Cognac, the birthplace of the fragrant spirit, where you can learn about the history and production of this iconic drink. Art enthusiasts may also wish to visit the Rochechouart Museum of Contemporary Art.
