Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Rio de Janeiro is a year round destination. Spring (September - October) is one of the nicest times to visit Rio, before the humidity sets in. Rio's forests and gardens are lush and beautiful to see at this time. Summer vacation begins in mid-December and lasts until February. During this time the beaches are packed with Cariocas working on their tans. This can also be the rainiest time of year in Rio. The heavy heat starts around October and will reach 40 degrees Celsius on a sunny day. Winter vacation happens in July and, although the days can stay hot, the evenings in Rio get relatively chilly dropping to 15 degrees Celsius. The winds and dampness can make this feel colder. Summers are best for diving while the winter months (June - August) are the best for surfers. Carnaval is held every year, 7 weeks before Easter Sunday. During this period, and often the weeks leading up to it, Rio is at its liveliest. It is also a time when prices skyrocket and crowds can become unbearable.

The beautiful Belmond Copacabana Palace is a true grande dame of a hotel. The historic building has an instantly recognisable facade, and is a real slice of old-fashioned elegance in the heart of the bustling Rio. I really loved my stay here, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a base for exploring this amazing city. The rooms are spacious and have wonderful high ceilings, and it's well worth being in a sea view room to wake up to views over the ocean. The location is ideal for exploring the city, strolling or jogging along Copacabana Beach and there are plenty of restaurants within easy reach, and one of the best restaurants in the city right here at the hotel itself! Expect genuine hospitality from the staff here - every person I met, from the doorman to the concierge desk couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming - true to what I've come to expect from Belmond's properties, and one of the real assets to the hotel.

Stepping through the doors of the Copacabana always feels like the start of an adventure, even if you're stopping for a coffee. When it opened in 1923 it represented the very height of sophistication in an exotic tropical paradise. Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner and Carmen Miranda flew in to laze under the palm fronds and gamble all night in the gold-leafed ballrooms. That old-school glamour is still here, twinkling away, while everything around it has changed (neighboring Ipanema is far more fashionable than Copacabana these days). Its current owner, the Orient-Express group, recently spent $15 million to make sure the neo-classical beauty gleams brighter and whiter than ever, but the real secret to its enduring success is the service. With more than 600 staff, there is never a shortage of waiters, or eagle-eyed housekeepers to dust cobwebs from 254 high-ceilinged bedrooms. The three impeccable restaurants take care of both businessmen and bikini-clad beauties (the lunchtime seafood buffet in Pergola is sensational), while a new boutique, Villa Copa, leaves no excuse for sloppy swimwear - not that the pool boy would bat an eyelid.

Even after 80-odd years of being the grande dame of Rio, the Belmond Copacabana Palace has still got it. Nowhere in Brazil, perhaps in all of Latin America, has quite the same flawless service of the Cop, and few have such an inviting pool, just made for lounging round and taking in the scene. The new spa is a temple to pampering, and the hotel's fine dining restaurant, the Cipriani, is still the place for movers and shakers to meet and eat. The hotel is classical in design (plenty of floral designs) which may not suit everyone, and Copacabana has long been eclipsed by Ipanema as THE place in Rio, but stay at the Belmond Copacabana Palace and you will know you have made it.
