There’s More to Tuscany Than Wine

Scattered with villas, olive groves and vineyards bursting across rolling hills, Tuscany is a stunning region of Italy. When many hear “Tuscany” the first thought that comes to mind is wine, and for good reason. However, Europe Travel Expert, Cammie discovered that there’s so much more to Tuscany than just vino.

Tuscany is known for its lush countryside, rolling hills, vineyards, cypress lined roads and olive groves. Tuscany is also world famous for its wine regions, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Carmignano and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Though a Tuscan wine tour is a can’t miss experience, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there is so much more to enjoy in Tuscany than just wine.

The seasons move quickly in Tuscany. In May and June you will get to experience the endless greenery and fields of vibrant wildflowers. In July and August the summer sun arrives and so do the endless panorama of sunflowers that will take your breath away. Fall is one of the best times to visit; it is time for the annual grape harvest and the celebration of this season’s crop buzzes in the air, the weather cools off and the colors of Fall start to bloom.

Each property in Tuscany offers something completely different. The romantic Borgo Santo Pietro, with its perfectly manicured gardens is a place that one can only dream of. The hotel grounds boast unbelievable views of undeveloped greenery. The location of Borgo Santo Pietro makes it extremely special, located in quaint town of Chuidsino, it’s worth every minute of the drive from Florence.

Borgo San Pietro offers festive, bright red Vespas to ride, tennis courts, beach volleyball and archery. An absolute highlight is sure to be a traditional Tuscan cooking class in the Borgo Cooking School located directly on the property. During the class I enjoyed time with Mamma Olga, who taught me how to cook her family’s recipes. Make sure you arrive to the class hungry, as you will, of course, have to eat everything you cook!

If seclusion and peace and quiet are what you are looking for, a stay at Monteverdi is just what you need. Monteverdi is perched on the hilltop located in a town of just 10 full-time residents.

This incredibly special hotel offers hot spring hunts, hikes with a nature guide to discover the local flora and fauna, hidden art tours to the cathedrals and hill towns, truffle hunting and mountain biking excursions. Monteverdi has an art gallery (that is free of charge) that exhibits international artists directly on their property.

Touring the Tuscan countryside is a real treat; around every bend is a new landscape, and at the beautiful Castello di Casole, the grounds feature natural wooded forests and hiking trails right from your doorstep. The divine infinity pool sits directly adjacent to a real Roman amphitheater. Comfort and luxury are of the highest importance here, while still maintaining a traditional feel. The hotel looks out on the endless and iconic landscape of Tuscany, and in the distance, the medieval hilltop town of Casole d’Elsa.

The rambling estate has endless activities to participate in directly from your doorstop. A sunrise hot air balloon excursion followed by a Tuscan inspired picnic is a must do. Also, right at your fingertips you have sunrise yoga, biking and hiking to local rivers, horseback riding and exploration of the neighboring authentic Italian villages. Also, two of Tuscany’s most ancient cities, Siena and San Gimignano, are just a short drive away.

If you are speaking about Tuscany, one cannot forget the incredible Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco. Located deep in the Tuscan countryside you’ll drive 10 miles of rustic dirt road to arrive at this ultra-luxurious resort. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco seems to magically make any activity request come to life.

The hotel offers a private golf course located on a UNESCO world heritage site, weekly live music in the summer, movies under the stars, and star gazing with the estate’s astronomer. The hotel offers so many different activities you won’t even want to leave the estate.

All in all, Tuscany really does have something for everyone, honeymooners, families and people of all ages. Tuscany is full of amazing experiences, making it the perfect spot for adventure, relaxation and rejuvenation! I know I want to go back!
