Average time to visit
The driest time to visit Con Dao is from November to February, though the seas are calmest from March to July. The rainy season lasts from June to September, but there are also northeast and southwest monsoons in autumn that can bring heavy winds. September and October are the hottest months, though even then the cool island breezes make Con Dao relatively comfortable when compared with Ho Chi Minh City.

The resort is beautiful, the food is out of this world but the star of the show has to be the amazing team. Everyone was so friendly and smiley whether it was a member of the restaurant team, the reception staff or maintenance garden team. Everyone always greeted us and made us feel welcome and a big beaming smile.

Amazing hotel right on the beach, lovely rooms with lots of space and incredible sea views. The staff go out of their way to help with everything, the food is varied and delicious and there is so much to do to keep everyone busy as well as plenty of space so you're never on top of anyone. The beach is picture perfect, not over-polished but naturally pristine with almost white sand and turquoise, calm water.

After visiting a few other Six Senses properties recently I had high expectations for their offering in Con Dao and it certainly didn't disappoint! They have a great spot of land with a beautiful beach on one of Vietnams least spoiled islands. With a population of just 5,000 people Con Dao is somewhat of a hidden gem so make sure you take an afternoon to explore it if you are adventurous. The resort is centerd around a beautiful bay with crystal clear waters & beautiful small islands surrounding it. The accommodation, all with great sea views, are spacious and somewhat rustic in style but are done up to such a luxurious standard. The private pools are great to relax by and hop into when it gets too warm. But there's to much more to the resort than the accommodation! Every day there's a suggested activity program which you can have as much or as little to do with as you like. There's enough on to keep everyone happy; there's a fantastic spa, a gym, water sports, table tennis, table football, a yoga pavilion, a free ice cream parlour and much more! Also, if you have children there's a fantastic children's club which will keep them occupied during the day whilst you do your own thing. The food was fantastic and the staff are so friendly which makes your stay and relaxed and peaceful as possible!

This is the newest of the Six Senses Resorts in Vietnam and has a very different feel to the longstanding favorite Six Senses Ninh Van Bay based further North in Nha Trang. Con Dao is a small archipelago of Islands of the southern tip of the country easily reached by plane from Ho Chi Minh City. The resort is located on the main island Co Ong which is home to a few local fishermen, a couple of villages and lots and lots of cows (about the only other thing you will see on the road on the short drive in from the airport).
As you enter the resort you can immediately feel the calm and Zen of the place, the main buildings leading away from the entrance are the bar and restaurants all built from local wood bleached silver by the sun and the sea breeze. Children will immediately be drawn to the ice cream parlour open all day and happy to dispense as many cones as parents will allow free of charge. If that isnt enough to win over the most discerning of younger travelers then the outdoor cinema and experience center down on the beach which offers non-motorized water sports plus daily activities in the kids club should keep them very busy! The beach at Con Dao is huge stretching in a perfect arc for hundreds of meters. I loved the sea here shallow enough to wade out comfortably before you can swim out further if you like. Great for children as its perfectly sandy underfoot and the waves are ideal for body boarding. Villas are either front row, right on the beach with a little set of steps heading down from your plunge pool onto the sand or you are behind built up higher on the second row but with spectacular sea views and a grand panorama over the whole resort. The style retains the natural barefoot feel of Six Senses properties but has given it a bit of a modern update. There are outdoor showers great for a revitalising wash each morning but also huge bathtubs indoors away from any uninvited guests for those pre-dinner soaks when you want to really relax.
Food is served in the hotels main restaurant which overlooks the beach and has a really excellent mix of western and European dishes. Its casual but still feel s special somehow and everyone is out relaxing on the day beds listing to music in the bar pre dinner. The other dining option is more local, lots of Vietnamese specialties including excellent Banh Mi Baguettes and huge steaming bowls of Pho.
The best thing about Con Dao is its accessibility; it is so easy to reach from Ho Chi Minh but feels a million miles away.

Six Senses Con Dao feels like a complete island paradise. The island of Con Dao itself is so quiet with just one of two motorbikes at a time along the roads and a couple of cows or two. The most impressive thing about the hotel is the amazing beach that it is on which is so long and fantastic for morning walks. The sand is also powder soft and the sea so calm I loved it. Then of course the food was delicious and there is a fantastic relaxed Vietnamese market restaurant which is great for a light bite at the bar. I was also hugely impressed by the spa. The therapist that I had, Bobby, was so intuitive and provided the best spa treatment that I have ever experienced just because she was so insightful about my stress levels, sleeping levels only using touch I hadnt told her a thing about any of this before the treatment.

This Six Senses property is situated just a 10 minute drive from the airport. The site occupies a beautiful stretch of beach, which is constantly cleaned and looks immaculate, with 50 villas spread out the length of the bay. Each villa has brilliant sea views, a private pool, and a bath with the most stunning view. It is one of the youngest Six Senses properties, so the furnishings within the villas ensure total luxury, whilst retaining their rustic and bare-foot style. The resort has two restaurants, both unique; one offering traditional Thai cuisine, great for a light lunch, plus a larger restaurant on the water front with a highly rated chef offering an exquisite menu.
Before dining I would recommend taking a cocktail in the bar on one of the swing seats, which is a great start to the evening. This resort arguably boasts the best scuba diving in Vietnam, plus other options to get out on the water. A trip can also be arranged to the prisons of Con Dao, for some history on the island. For larger groups and families, the 2+ bedroom villas provide an incredible set-up for all ages and with the kids entertainment area, there are activities to keep the children happy.

Having been lucky enough to visit other Six Senses properties, I was intrigued to see what the latest addition to the Six Senses Asia hotels would look like. Landing on Con Dao is an experience, the 100 or so propeller plane hovers over the ocean and then lands on a runway, really just an extension of the beach.
The resort is slightly more contemporary in style than its sister properties. We were very lucky to stay in the 3 bedroom ocean front villa just incredible with a full size infinity swimming pool of our own and uninterrupted sea views. The size of all the villas from the 1 bedroom duplex to the 4 bedroom complex is so generous and provides plenty of space even for larger families.
Sadly it was a little rainy one of the days we were staying at Con Dao so we decided to take a trek through the national park, through an old fruit plantation and along the coast. The trek was relatively easy going and only a basic level of fitness required, but our guide George was great at gauging our levels and could easily pick up the pace where needed to make this a more strenuous trek. Our first spot was a blue viper before we came across a tribe of long tailed Macau monkeys endemic to Con Dao Island. Following the 3 hour trek a spa treatment was most welcomed. I enjoyed the Oriental massage and it was one of the best I have ever experienced.
There are a number of dining experiences here and we enjoyed a beautiful fusion of wagyu beef mixed up with local Con Dao shrimps and another evening a Vietnamese tasting menu in the traditional open kitchen setting. The Vietnamese food is just so fresh and light.
Sadly, Con Dao has a haunting past with 11 prisons from the days of French and American occupation which finally closed in the mid 70s and a visit here, whilst daunting, is worthwhile to understand the history of this beautiful and untouched part of Vietnam.
Dugongs (which also go by the rather less mystical name of sea cows) are rarely spotted, so have become a rite-of-passage prize for divers. They are, however, regularly seen pootling through the teal-green depths of the South China sea, which surrounds the protected Con Dao marine nature reserve. This pristine archipelago, a 45-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), offers some of the best underwater hours in Asia, with more than 1,300 species to note in the logbook. Things arent bad on terra firma either. Even before its opening late last year, the resort had won several style awards. The 50 villas are built for the Greta Garbo lurking in all of us. Bookended by emerald mangrove forests, teeming with black squirrels and bursting with exotic orchids, they have been cleverly sprinkled along a mile of sandy shoreline to guarantee maximum privacy. A beady eye has also ensured that they are conscience-soothingly sustainable, with local materials and reclaimed teak, including more than 1,000 delicately carved antique panels. The ambience is Robinson Crusoe reimagined by tom Ford: lots of white, lots of windows, even more draped muslin and the obligatory private infinity pool. Visit between April and September to see turtles struggle out of the water to lay their eggs in the sand: the island is one of Asia's most popular breeding spots.
