Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge overlooks the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Reserve in Western Uganda, close to where the gorilla treks start. Guests stay in one of the eight simple stone cottages, each of which offers stunning views over the forest canopy.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to gorillas, monkeys, chimpanzees and birds. Tracking gorillas in the so-called ‘impenetrable' forest is a magical experience.
The Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge is pleasant lodge and is located just outside the reserve, around 500m from the gorilla trailhead. The eight stone and thatch cottages are comfortable but basic, with en-suite bathrooms.
Guests can spend the day mesmerized by exotic sounds, or watching primates and birds in the canopy from the terrace of the cottage, which juts out into the forest. The main areas are similarly simple, but enjoy great views out over the dense forest and down the valley. As well as gorilla tracking itself, guests can go on guided forest and birding walks, as well as village and pygmy visits. There is also a nice river stroll on the property itself.
Accommodation at Bwindi Lodge is in eight stone and tile bandas which are elevated above the canopy commanding stunning views of the forest. All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms, large wooden beds with mosquito nets and a private veranda looking over the forest.
Although there are no specific child care facilities, children are most welcome at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge. Food and meal times can be adjusted to suit younger guests and babysitting can easily be arranged for those that need it. However it should be noted that children under the age of 15 are not permitted to visit the gorillas.
The dining room and bar both enjoy dramatic views across the valley and dense forest just below. The lodge has a curio shop selling local handicraft.
The main activity available at the lodge is gorilla trekking - there are four families of gorilla that can be tracked from the lodge. Guests can also enjoy guided nature walks or a hike to the nearby waterfalls. Visits to the local village community are on offer to give you a taste of the local way of living. It is also possible to visit the Bwindi tea processing tour as well as the local hospital which are both projects supported by Volcanoes Safaris.

Bwindi Lodge is in a stunning position with fabulous views over the forest to the mountains beyond and is found a short distance from the park gates from where the gorilla treks start. All of the cottages are positioned to soak up these views and each are named after one of the local gorillas...mine was called 'Bob'!! The cottages are all spacious with lovely hot showers, which was particularly welcome after our gorilla trek and I loved the small touches such as a hot water bottle in my bed at night at the hot coals which could be put in the cottage at bed time to take the chill off.
But of course you don't really visit Bwindi for the lodge...its all about the gorilla's! The gorilla trekking was out of this world...we were very lucky and had a short trek and saw the family of gorillas in a clearing so I managed to take some incredible photos. But I also took the time to sit and just soak up the experience rather than take the gorillas in just through a camera lens which I would highly recommend. Watching the baby gorilla trying to play with the vast silverback and a bother nursing a tiny 3 month old baby was something I will never forget and moved me to tears.
A new and exclusive experience, spend a day in the jungle observing Uganda's mountain gorilla, and learning about the species. Help researches in this unique opportunity, aimed at saving the species from extinction.
