Semliki Lodge is situated within the Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve, offering a truly personal wilderness experience, as it is the only accommodation within over 500 square km. The aim of the lodge is to create a comfortable, traditional accommodation in the amazing surroundings of the reserve. Due to the remoteness of the lodge and the vastness of the reserve guests feel as if they have the whole place to themselves.

Semliki Lodge has eight huge canvas tents with thatched roofs, allowing a true African experience where you are able to take in the sights around you during the day and the sounds during the evenings. All the tents have en suite bathrooms with running water and private providing amazing panoramic views of the area and wildlife. The tents aim to offer the utmost comforts including muslin draped four poster beds, Persian carpets and many other special touches. The lodge itself and the tents are all built out of local materials, which keeps the traditional rustic mood without losing that all-important comfort. The food offered at the lodge has been known as the 'Best food in Uganda', and continuing with the lodge's aim to maintain traditional charm, all the food is home made, from the muffins served in the mornings to the relishes and chutneys served during the day.

In conjunction with Indiana University, the lodge is running a chimpanzee research project in Semliki. The habitat is ideal to collect data which will help to further understand the evolution of man, particularly 'bipedalism' (walking on two feet).

The research is in the early stages, but guests at Semliki Lodge are able to accompany the resident researchers into the forest to assist with the habituation and research of these fascinating creatures.

Top tip:

Spending a morning sitting with a troop of chimps after trekking through the forest was incredibly rewarding and they are so human it was almost alarming!
