Cappadocia
Cappadocia is Turkey’s most visually striking region, especially the 'moonscape' area around the towns of Urgup, Goreme and Uchisar. The region was once covered by a torrent of lava, which smothered hundreds of miles of the landscape.
Over the years, floods, rain and winds have eroded this area to form caves, clefts, "fairy chimneys", fissures and valleys. Incredible houses, churches and chapels were carved into the soft rock and visitors today can explore these at the Goreme open-air museum, where frescoes dating back to the 10th to the 13th centuries, still cover the ceilings and walls.
Floating over this incredible lunar landscape at dawn in a hot air balloon, hiking or horse riding through the volcanic valleys, are all wonderful ways to experience this fascinating region.
