Average time to visit

From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year. Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.

Close to Cape Weligama, Suriyawatta overlooks the Galle coast and offers a well-appointed family home for up to 10 people in the south of Sri Lanka. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the garden and pool terrace descend to a private gate to the beach.

Suriyawatta is named after the two Indian tulip trees that shade the garden (Suriya) and the name for a dwelling (Watta). The beautiful south facing villa is an ideal retreat on the south coast of Sri Lanka, offering five charming bedrooms (all ensuite) around a courtyard and leading to an open-plan living and dining space both inside and out.

With discreet yet attentive staff including a professional chef, guests can relax during their stay and make the most of this idyllic stretch of Weligama coastline. Halcyon days at the villa can be spent appreciating views of the azure Indian Ocean from french doors in the vaulted living room, to shady verandas and serene pool set amidst lush terraced gardens. With direct access to the beach via a private gate, there is no need to travel far for walks along the coastline, seasonal surfing and swimming.

There are an abundance of places to visit nearby. From the three quarter acre site, it is easy to visit Galle for shopping and the Dutch Fort UNESCO World Heritage Site or take a trip down to the surfing school at Weligama Bay or Mirissa Beach.

A total of 10 guests can be accommodated in five en-suite bedrooms at Suriyawatta, two double rooms and three twins. All rooms are air conditioned and include storage, safe, mosquito net and fan. All rooms expect one are located in the main house, one twin room is in a separate building.

The master bedroom of the villa, offers guests a four poster, king size bed, shower and bathtub and measures 4.4m by 4.6m.

Master Guest Bedroom (Bedroom 2)

The Master Guest Bedroom of the villa, offers guests a four poster, king size bed, shower and measures 4.6m by 4.5m.

Twin Room (Bedroom 3)

Bedroom 3 of the villa, offers guests two twin size beds, shower and bathtub and measures 4.6m by 4.5m.

Twin Room (Bedroom 4)

Bedroom 4 of the villa, offers guests two twin beds, a shower and measures 4.6m by 3.7m.

Twin Room (Bedroom 5)

Bedroom 5 of the villa, offers guests two twin beds, a shower and measures 5m by 4.1m. This is the only room that is located in a separate building to the rest of the villa.


The villa is child friendly and cots, high chairs, car seats, toys, DVDs, Nannies and after hours babysitting can be arranged and there are also swings for children in the garden.


In addition to the ample living space within the villa itself, there is a dining veranda, swimming pool measuring 15.5m by 5.4m with eight sun beds, a fully equipped kitchen (including ice cream maker) and BBQ and car parking on site.


Within the villa there is a DVD library and book/magazine library. From the villa there is access to the beach although swimming and surfing is only safe at certain times of the year (more so from Mid December to the end of April) Nearby is Galle and its 17th century Dutch Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Weligama and Mirissa for some of the world's best Whale and Dolphin watching. Here and at Dahawalla and Mihiripanna you can also enjoy snorkeling, sailing, fishing, sea kayaking and boating.
