Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Any time’s a good time to go to Singapore. Practically on the equator, Singapore is constantly warm (the temperature never drops below 20°C) and humid and gets fairly steady year-round rainfall. The wettest months are supposedly November to January, when it’s also a degree or two cooler, while the driest are supposedly May to July, but in reality there is little distinction between the seasons.
The Singapore Sling, invented in 1915 by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at Raffles Hotel as a ladies’ drink, is still enjoyed by today. No visit to Singapore is complete without having a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar. Ingredients: gin, cherry brandy, pineapple juice, lime juice, Cointreau, Dom Benedict

Iconic, colonial, grand and old worldly are just some of the words conjured up when describing Raffles. It has a firmly established reputation in Singapore regularly playing host to Royals, VIPs and celebrities. Although this may not be a selling point it does speak for it's standing in the city as a go to for so many. It first opened its doors in 1887 so is steeped in history. It has even named some of its suites after a selection of the most commendable guests who have stayed there. All this aside, the suites are beautiful in a traditional sense and dining options are in abundance. Each restaurant or bar has its own character and story to it. It is a timeless building of great beauty and elegance, with a standard of service to match.

Raffles is the grand dame of hotels in Singapore, steeped in history with a really colonial feel to both the building and atmosphere. Dating from 1887, it is named after Singapore's founfer, Sir Stamford Raffles. The property has retained its old-school charm and glamour, with typically colonial furnishings and attentive service from all the staff (still dressed in tradional, colonial attire) This isn't the hotel for you if you are a fan of the super-modern, sleek hotel but amidst the modern advances of most Asian cities, Raffles is a welcome insight into the past. The Long Bar is well worth a visit (with peanut shells covering the floor) and it is here that the Singapore Sling cocktail was invented by barman Ngiam Tong Boon sometime between 1910 and 1915. Have it shaken by a barman rather than from the draught taps (brought in to cater for the influx of visitors wanting to sample the famous drink) and enjoy the history that surrounds you, past visitors include Ernest Hemingway and Somerset Maugham. Raffles really is charming to the hilt, but utterly welcoming and quintessentially Singaporean.
