Nyungwe Forest National Park
One of Africa’s oldest rainforests in the southwest corner of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity. Home to lofty ancient ebony and mahogany trees covered in orchids, visitors are treated to over 275 species of bird, 120 species of butterfly, 75 different mammals, over 1,000 plant species and 13 species of primate, including the famous chimpanzees.
The forest is home to several communities of chimpanzees who have become habituated over the years to human visitors and seeing these wonderful creatures swinging through the trees, grooming each other and foraging for food is an experience to treasure. Along with tracking the chimps, it is also possible to track the handsome black and white colobus monkeys, take a guided walk through the equatorial rainforest, enjoy some superb birdwatching and savor a monkey’s eye view from East Africa’s highest canopy walk.
