Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian vacation week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.

Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.

Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.

The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

For the younger guests, Shangri-La has a great children's club, enjoying the space indoors and out. For teenagers and adults, there is the dive center with the fantastic house reef to explore. For those who want more of an adrenalin rush there is windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing which can be watched while sitting at the pool bar sipping a cocktail.

The Shangri-La is a large island with lots to do, and its lakes give it a totally unique feature for the Maldives. It is also quite a good choice for history buffs as neighboring island Gan was a British base during World War II and Villingili itself was occupied with some original structures still dotted around the resort. The food is very good quality, particularly at Dr Ali's, where guests can choose from three different cuisines. Despite being large, personal bicycles make it very easy to get around. The house reef is excellent.

Fantastic! on word to describe this place. The villas are sumptuous, the island is fascinating and the service is second to none - if there is a rival for Reethi Rah this is it.

It is SO different from any other resort in the Maldives, not last due to it's sheer size - over 3km long it is home to fresh water lakes - quite a surprise when we are used to tiny sand spits further north playing host to 100 villas. The make up of the island feels more like Thailand by comparison to its counterparts. One side of the island faces the ocean and as a result villas on this side do not essentially have white sandy beach but they do come at a discount along with a private pool and fabulous views from the Tree House Villas in particular. If you do want a great beach the other side of the island hosts a fantastic main beach as well as beach villas for those who want to open their doors to sand between their toes and then there are the enormous water villas!

This resort really suits both couples and families. it has a super kids club but there is so much room on the island that you can get away from the smaller fraternity if you so desire.

The dining options are second to none and history of the island is fascinating - there is still evidence from the military use of the island. So much contrast - if you're worried about going to The Maldives and being bored - come here - it's a bit further but worth it!

Vilingilli is an excellent resort and a good balance between family friendly and exclusive. [The site] is much more natural [than some competitors] and well equipped without being too over the top.

In Vilingilli we used the watersports, tennis, scuba diving and a few or the organized trips. All were excellent. The trips were good. The Scuba team were excellent with an interesting range of dives. The beach equipment gave

plenty of choice. The tennis coach was a really nice chap.

I wasnt sure what to expect from a group, largely renowned for business hotels in the East, but I was more than pleasantly surprised by their fabulous leisure property in the south of The Maldives. The domestic flight down to Gan is very comfortable and far more reliable than waiting for the seaplanes to take you to midways resorts and the transfer by boat was a skip and a jump form the airport. It is an ENITIRELY different resort to any other in The Maldives and should not be compared to other islands further north. As part of the old RAF and Naval bases, reminders are scattered round the island which is over 3km in length and is also home to three freshwater lakes. One side of the island faces the ocean and does not benefit from such a good beach with lots of coral and rougher waters, however, all villas have pools and the saving you make on these residences is well worth it when you can stroll to the main beach should you want the sand between your toes. This side is also home to the fabulous Tree House Villas set on stilts with magnificent views over the jungle and ocean, they are truly unique to Shangri La.

The lagoon side of the island is far calmer with a glorious powder, white, sandy beach (and a premium on the villas to match) and is where youll find many of the public facilities and water villas. Close by in the center of the island, the kids club, gym and all manner of other facilities are superbly set up and accessible.

The villas themselves are vast and opulent. If you can stretch to a Beach Villa with Pool go for it - but the water villas are fairly fabulous too! Sadly the twin beach villas and villas with a separate sitting room are spread over two separate pavilions with no interior connecting doors which does not make it ideal for younger families who want to sleep in separate rooms but for slightly older children, it is a fantastic option!
