Luang Prabang
Undoubtedly one of Southeast Asia's finest towns, Luang Prabang is a tranquil UNESCO protected area flanked by lofty green mountains and the mighty Mekong river. It has the most magical atmosphere and radiates charm with small lanes that are peppered with ochre French-Indochinese villas and gleaming red-roofed gilded temples.
Many come to Luang Prabang to see the lines of saffron-robed monks receive alms from locals each morning, a ritual that is synonymous with Luang Prabang and still integral to daily life in Laos. However, we feel there's so much more to this enchanting town. The resplendent temples are dazzling and due to being UNESCO protected, they are some of the best preserved Theravada Buddhist temples in Asia. Nearby to the town you'll find glorious emerald waterfalls, known as Kuang Si, where we can organize a gourmet breakfast picnic without the crowds. For families the Living Land experience offers the opportunity to learn how to plant rice or drive a bullock cart. A visit to a local school for young monks or a guided tour by bicycle is also a firm favorite with families. What's more, the town is also a wonderful place to unwind with some of the finest hotels and spas in the country. Lining the streets are quirky cafes, fine boutiques and fantastic restaurants; this means you can simply spend days pottering at your own leisure, absorbing the sleepy tropical atmosphere. Luang Prabang really is one of a kind.
