Niigata
Blessed with a picturesque view of the Sado Island and the Sea of Japan, Niigata has a long history as a major port town of Japan. Today, it is also the largest city on the west coast of Honshu.
Its subtropical climate has long attracted local vacationmakers looking for the summer escape. It is also acclaimed to have one of the best rice production in Japan, as well as an acclaimed sake industry built on top of it. The popular Sado Island was also featured in the landmark movie Spirited Away, with the now-iconic tarai bune (traditional washtub boat) drawing fans into Niigata.
