Average time to visit
Guatemala is known as, “The land of eternal spring”. Temperatures in the highlands are mild and vary little during the year. Average temperatures are highs of 77F and lows of 55F. May to October is the rainy season but this doesn’t affect all areas and more often means sunny mornings with showers beginning around 4pm. June is the month with the higher average pluvial precipitation peaks. July and August typically offer a week of dry weather known as the “Indian summer”, which can be an ideal time to travel. November to February is the dry-cold season when there is little to no rain but temperatures can be cool, especially in the early morning and evening. These months have the lower peaks of temperature in January, and low average ranges in pluvial precipitation. March to April is the dry-warm season when the weather is hot and dry. The higher temperature peaks are in April and also the lower precipitation averages.
The height of the foreign tourist season is from Christmas to Easter. Things become acute around Christmas, New Year’s and Easter, when Guatemalans take vacations too – we recommend booking many months in advance. Another high season runs June to August.
To start planning your vacation to El Convento
Set on one of Antigua's famed cobblestone streets, El Convento is a luxury boutique hotel with an intimate atmosphere and is a haven of peace from which to discover the city’s magnificent heritage. This is the perfect introduction to Guatemala.
Combining a colonial ambience with state-of-the-art facilities and excellent service, El Convento is the most luxurious place to stay in the architecturally and culturally fascinating city of Antigua, ringed by three majestic volcanoes. Anitigua is often heralded as Guatemala's most beautiful colonial city, and in fact in the whole of Central America, and this is the perfect place form which to explore.
El Convento's 26 rooms and suites feature flat screen televisions, iPod docks and wireless internet, while fireplaces, multi-directional rain showers and outdoor Jacuzzi tubs on private decks create a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation.
Native plants and fountains fill the courtyard and walled gardens and there is a small lap pool, while a terracotta–tiled walkway and shady alcoves offer seating areas with indigenous cushions providing a splash of color. As the sun sets, head to the rooftop patio for sublime views of the surrounding volcanoes before feasting at the hotel's wonderful El Convento restaurant, serving exquisitely presented gourmet dishes with subtle twists and infused with spices, flowers and fruits of the region.
El Convento's suites are all extremely spacious, ranging in size from 570sq ft upwards, and are individually decorated in an elegant style carefully blending traditional features with contemporary style and comforts. Features vary between the different suites and can include beamed ceilings, comfortable chaise lounges, private gardens, outdoor Jacuzzis and open fireplaces.
Children are welcome at El Convento although the child-orientated facilities are limited. There is a separate area of the pool for children accompanied by an adult and babysitting can be arranged on request. The Grand Suites are split-level and therefore a good option for families.
El Convento has lovely gardens, a small, heated lap pool, a bar and the gourmet El Convento restaurant, serving delicious cuisine amongst elegant surroundings.
El Convento is perfectly located for exploring the town of Antigua. Considered to be one of the most beautiful colonial towns in the Americas, Antigua is a highlight of any trip to Guatemala, with its cobblestone streets lined with charming, brightly colored buildings, well preserved churches and convents and colorful local handicrafts. Excursions can also be arranged out of the city to some of the bustling local markets such as Chichicastenango and Sololá and to hike the Pacaya volcano.
Mark Beken (Staff)
There are plenty of boutique options in Antigua, but El Convento is one of the best. Its location is excellent, just a few blocks from the main square and the service here befits its status as the top place in town. I liked the touches such as choice of pillow and the cool hibiscus teas they offer, and the quality of the finishing in the rooms. It is also one of the few boutique options in town to have a notable restaurant, not perhaps a vital consideration when there are so many good places to eat, but great if you fancy a splurge. El Convento is an absolute steal considering what you get for your money.
