In the vicinity of the lovely Hackescher Markt once thrived the “Scheunenviertel,” Berlin’s “lower east side”…Yiddish theaters, Hebrew bookstores, rabbis and entrepreneurs met and mingled, made their fortunes or moved on. Today, with the New Synagogue housing the important community center and house of prayer, the Centrum Judaicum, Jewish life has returned after the devastation of the Holocaust.
We will take you to the grave of honor for Moses Mendelssohn, the home of the world’s first female rabbi, Regina Jonas, and the current Jewish high school. The oldest Jewish gravestone dates from 1244 and the 800 year-old history is rich in celebrities like Einstein, Billy Wilder or Daniel Barenboim. Walter Benjamin’s “One Way Street” became a true-to-life metaphor for the persecution, driving out and murder of the Berlin Jews. See how the Germans, Jewish and non-Jewish, remember and honor the victims and survivors in many important memorials. Hear about the Women’s Protest that freed Jewish men from a pre-deportation camp. Each new wave of Jewish immigration changed the picture, from the 19th century Eastern European shtetls to the post-wall Russian immigrants to the current wave of Israeli young people settling in Berlin.
Your private guide can also take you to the impressive attempt to remember the Shoah--the Holocaust memorial, as well as Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum. As witnessed in the numerable active synagogues, cultural and educational institutions today Jewish history and remembrance live in a critical balance with contemporary Berlin Jewish life.
