Drumming in Salvador
In a mind boggling myriad of rhythms, it has attracted many international musicians to these shores.
Salvador has a lot of famous percussion groups as the “Afro Bloco Filhos de Gandhi”, composed exclusively of men and inspired by the principles of nonviolence and peace of Mahatma Gandhi. Olodum is the most famous of all Bahian percussion groups, being present in 35 countries around the world and in thousands of cities, bringing joy and high spirits for more than 20 million people throughout his career. The “afro blocos” are also an important tool in the fight against prejudice and discrimination. Their example of success values the self-esteem of black people and their communities.
This morning you will meet with a famous Brazilian percussionist and under his expert guidance you will investigate and contextualize varied aspects of the percussive jungle that is Bahia, focusing on the more important and accessible rhythms in a workshop that is instructive, interactive, engaging and fun. Some of the instruments are the drums of the candomblé, surdo, caixa, timbau and repique drums of the samba-reggae as well as agogo, reco-reco and caxixi, and of course the formidable berimbau, the main instrument of the capoeira. This is a great option for families and for those who have a passion to learn about another culture through their main roots, such as music.
