Alaska is best visited during the summer months (May to September), when the days are longest and the temperatures are at their peak. This season is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting and flightseeing and also coincides with the salmon run and the best times to travel to the wilderness regions.

    At a Glance

Today begins with an early morning pick-up for a floatplane flight to Winterlake Lodge. A luxury wilderness lodge, sitting on the quiet shores of Winter Lake, owners Carl and Kirsten Dixon have created a wonderful haven of relaxation and sustainable adventure. For the following three nights, you will stay in one of five cozy Cabins, providing the perfect opportunity to experience the endless wilderness and beauty of Alaska, as well as indulge in a range of sports and activities. The small nature of the lodge ensures an intimate and convivial ambience. Kirsten is an acclaimed and accomplished chef and the food served at Winterlake is exceptionally good, based on local, fresh, and organic produce.

Winterlake is on the site of a former hunting camp and since the couple have ceased all hunting activities, the wildlife has returned to the area, with large populations of bear, moose, wolverine, and wolves, among others. The lodge also sits on the Iditarod National Historic Trail, serving as the Finger Lake checkpoint for the famous Iditarod sled dog race. The trail makes for great hiking as does the adjacent Wolverine Mountain. The Wolverine Ridge Trail rewards hikers with wildlife spotting and glorious views of Mount Denali. Along with guided hiking, guests can engage with an array of activities including kayaking, canoeing, yoga, and cookery classes.

Your final full day at Winterlake includes a thrilling helicopter adventure, allowing you to appreciate and explore the pristine backcountry surrounding the lodge. Choose from several options including heli-fishing, heli-rafting on the wild waters of the Happy River, heli-hiking to a glacier ridge, glacier trekking or the unique experience of dining on Wolverine Ridge.
