Fall is Rhode Island's most glorious season, though spring and summer are pleasant as well. These times bring in healthy-sized crowds due to favourable weather and special events. Weather usually remains warm throughout September, while cooler temperatures in October bring out the colorful foliage. Winter lasts too long for most people's tastes, stretching from December to April. During this period, visitors can expect temperatures below freezing and plenty of snow.
To start planning your vacation to Weekapaug Inn
The much-loved historic Weekapaug Inn on Rhode Island has been enhanced by a multi-million dollar facelift. If you're seeking classic New England laid-back charm, wonderful white sand beaches and fresh beachy interiors, Weekapaug Inn has it in spades.
Rhode Island, New England is a favorite spot for family reunions and beach vacations for New Yorkers and Bostonians seeking low-key outdoorsy vacations with long days spent languishing on the beach - think Cornwall with better weather. Following its recent refurbishment the historic 31 room Weekapaug Inn has much to attract travelers from further afield looking for an intimate, laid-back, family-friendly, quintessential New England beach retreat.
Weekapaug Inn is approached along an ambling coastal road which passes by typical weathered shingle vacation cottages with spectacular ocean views. The Inn is perched overlooking the impossible-to-pronounce but peaceful bird and boat filled waters of the Quonochontaug Pond and the white sands of the splendid Weekapaug Community beach is only a few minutes walk away.
Interiors by designer Nancy Taylor are classic New England - beachy and fresh and with a nod to the nautical - plenty of tongue and groove, polished wood, white linen and pretty fabrics mixed in with antique furniture and prints. There are roaring fires to cosy up to with a book, pairs of binoculars for bird aficionados or for simply gazing out to sea.
The 27 guest rooms and one-bedroom suites are perfect for couples while small families and larger groups will love the four two-bedroom suites (really good-sized apartments) which can sleep up to six and come with fully-fitted gleaming kitchens and dining tables, a TV den and spacious living rooms. All rooms have frette linen, shaker-style maple furniture, sumptuous beds and state-of-the-art bathroom fittings (most have showers but some have free-standing bath tubs). There are also four suites in the Fenway Cottage which overlook the pool and Quonochontaug Pond.
As a member of Relais & Chateaux, food here is taken seriously, but much like the interiors is kept simple and straightforward: from New England staples such as clam chowder and buttery lobster rolls, to juicy burgers, artisan cheeses, seafood stew and homemade pasta. The menus throughout the hotel's various restaurants offer a modern interpretation of New England coastal cuisine and use traditional native foraging, local produce, and sustainable seafood. The Bathhouse is located at the beach - where you can deposit your valuables and swap them for an umbrella and deck chairs or cool off with a glass of homemade lemonade and sandwich. Guests at Weekapaug can also take the regular shuttle service to its sister property the Ocean House at Watch Hill where dining is a little more formal. If you're still feeling peckish, each floor has a pantry where guests can help themselves to cookies and hot drinks.
Other than the obvious attraction of the beach just a short walk away, there is a fabulous 23-meter Asian-inspired lap pool overlooking the estuary. The hotel has kayaks and a fleet of traditional wooden New England sailing dinghies (called Beetle cats). A great way to explore the coast is by bike which they had to lend and there are shuffleboard and Bocce courts.
The Inn has 27 bedrooms and four two-bedroom suites. The rooms and suites have a very homely feel to them with their tasteful furnishings and décor. With fresh flowers, large windows and beautiful views of the town, the pond, the ocean or the little cove, you will not want to leave.
The suites are almost like private cottages with a kitchen, two bedrooms and living area. They can sleep up to six providing the ideal accommodation choice if traveling as a family. They have private patios or balconies from which you can soak up the beautiful surroundings and are decorated in fresh colors.
Children are welcome to come and stay at Weekapaug Inn and there are plenty of activities to keep them entertained particularly if they are the Swallow and Amazon type, happy mucking about on the beach or on the water. Throughout the summer months, the Sandcastle program is a club for children ages 5-10 years and they can participate in afternoon and evening programs led by professional counsellors.
The Restaurant at Weekapug Inn serves Mediterranean dishes with a Yankee influence. You can eat outside in the summer on the splendid patio or enjoy the cosy intimate atmosphere by the fire inside during the colder months. You can enjoy a lighter menu, cocktails and other refreshing beverages at The Garden Room. The SeaRoom has a more casual atmosphere with is expansive sea views and inviting comfort. The menu includes some appetising Mediterranean salads.
The resort has a focus on wellness and this is evident in there wide range of facilities available to stimulate you and to relax you. There is a fabulous fitness center, a range of classes and an inviting pool. Guests also have access to the OH! Spa at Ocean House, just a short drive away.
At Weekapaug Inn and the local area, there are plenty of activities suitable for all-ages. One of the highlights are the two miles of pristine beach virtually on your doorstep.
For nature lovers, there are guided kayaking tours and bird spotting outings with the resident naturalist as well as superb saltwater fishing opportunities. With its waterfront location, there are many boating experiences on offer; you can go kayaking, rowing or sailing. The Inn has connections with local golf courses and tennis courts if you are after some sport. If you want to explore more of Rhode Island, the Inn will happily lend you a bike and pack a picnic.
