  • Stay in the room where George Washington slept during his 1789 visit to Salem

Blending seamlessly the old with the new, The Merchant is a striking hotel located in the heart of Salem's historic district which showcases its vibrant history through well-maintained original features. Beginning life as the home of Joshua Ward, a successful sea merchant, this beautiful boutique hotel has seen itself transformed into a tavern, office block and rare book shop before finally becoming the fascinating property it is today.

With just 11 guestrooms and suites, The Merchant provides a cozy and intimate atmosphere and highly personalized service making for an enjoyable stay. Each room has its own individual character and color schemes are fun and quirky, giving a nod to the eclectic history of both the property and Salem itself. Apple TV, iPads, iPod docking stations and gas fireplaces are provided in every room and complimentary WiFi is also available throughout. Guests can also choose to stay in the room George Washington himself slept in during his 1789 trip to Salem, boasting 18th century wooden panelling and a not-so-subtle patriotic theme.

A short stroll away from The Merchant lie many of Salem's key attractions, including the Salem Witch Museum, where you can learn about all the gruesome details of the trials, and the House of Seven Gables, the oldest surviving 17th Century wooden mansion in New England. The pretty harbor is also just a 5-minute walk away and visitors can enjoy cruising the calm waters to observe the coastline and its historic lighthouses.
