Expectations were high as we turned into the 5 mile driveway leading to the Montage Palmetto Bluff. We already have such wonderful feedback from our guests staying in the hotels on the West coast that anticipation for another incredible experience is palpable. We wind along the road, glimpsing beautiful houses along roads either side of us, for this is a slightly different experience to other Montages. The village feel to Palmetto Bluff and the huge area (over 20,000 acres) make this an interesting concept, will it work for our guests? As we made our way toward the main inn we could have been in Cape Cod or Marthas Vineyard, save for the Spanish moss flowing down form the Oak tree branches all around us, a sure fire clue to our deep South location. We were greeted warmly and taken in to the white washed in and taken back to an elegant bygone day. Check in is swift and friendly and before we know it we are on board a golf cart being whisker across bridges over alligator infested lagoons (apparently they arent interested in humans and were quite safe). Rooms are comfy and connecting options available, however, the inn has so much more, from cosy stand alone cottages for couples through to stunning 3 and 4 bedroom village homes and residences filled with every luxury you could want for an independent family vacation, yet with all the wonderful hotel facilities just a stroll, bike ride or buggy journey away. This does feel more like a village and I enjoy strolling around the immaculate streets, admiring the clap board houses all beautifully designed. There is a community here as well as guests and it makes for a warm and welcoming feel. We chat with some locals over smores at the firepit that evening (complimentary for guests each night, wonderfully decadent) and although its a long walk back to the room we are cheerfully scooped up by a friendly employee in a buggy who gives us a lift home. The next day we head out on the water, the Montage is surrounded by salt water marshlands, calm waters abundant with bird life and marine life and a wonderful playground for guests. Were traveling by motor boat in search of dolphins and we find them after not too long. We visit the sand bar which is often accessible during the day to gives guests their beach fix as the nearest conventional beach is around 30 minutes drive away. Apart from that though, there is nothing else missing from this amazing little place. Its a playground for active guests whether thats heading out on a canoe or paddle board, heading to a secret island for an ultimate fun day with the family, cycling the pathways of the inn and beyond or having a round of golf or a tennis lesson. From conventional to more unusual experiences (the alligator brown bag lunch, moonlight paddle and porching on the river house particularly intrigue) this place is a vacation in itself and every day can be interesting and different or simply relaxed and lazy. It has all the normal Montage benefits, great service, wonderful accommodation and fantastic facilities, then so much more. A Deep South location just 30 minutes from historic Savannah, a wealth of waterways to explore, Southern hospitality and those beautiful oak trees resplendent in their Spanish moss decoration. You may have to travel a little further to get here, but once you do, it's well worth the journey for this lovely little Southern secret.
