Tour of Trincomalee
Trincomalee, East Coast, Sri Lanka
A visit to Trincomalee, also known as Trinco, will generally include a visit to Koneswaram Temple and Fort Frederick for a historical overview. This tour will also take in some of the lovely beaches in the area, including Uppuveli and Nilaveli.
Located in the North East, Trincomalee is the region's largest city and has a long colonial history; changing hands repeatedly among the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the British, in a series of side-shows to the European wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. It finally fell to the British in 1795 and became one of the British Empire's most important ports in Asia. In more recent times it was affected by the 30 years of Civil War, of which there are still signs today.
