The Maha monsoon blows from October to January, bringing rain to the North and East, while the dry season is from May to September. The North and East are comparatively dry, with around 1000mm of rain annually. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Out-of-season travel has its advantages – not only do the crowds go away but many airfares and accommodation prices drop right down. Nor does it rain all the time during the low season.

With Sigiriya Rock Fortress as its backdrop, Water Garden Sigiriya hotel is a modern take on the 2,000 year old water garden found at the ancient ruins. Designed by renowned architect Channa Daswatte, this luxury hotel is as much about the views as it is the interiors.

The property has a really lovely spacious feel and the rooms are enormous! Staying here makes you feel extremely spoiled and provides a great base from which to explore the surrounding area of the Cultural Triangle. We had a wonderful dinner at the restaurant with a great choice of western and Sri Lankan dishes, all of which was delicious and very refined.

Water Garden definitely has the wow-factor from the off as you are greeted with unparalleled views of the mighty Sigiriya. Unlike other resorts it contemporary in style but still manages to blend into its surroundings. Pathways divide lakes and paddy fields with the resorts villas and facilities dotted spaciously around. The villas themselves are the best in the area, luxurious and characterful and you'll feel right at home. If you are going during the hotter months I'd recommend a Superior Deluxe Villa as it has a little plunge pool which is perfect to cool down in. The main pool area is also great, with views directly onto Sigiriya it's a great little spot for an afternoon dip. I'd also say that Water Garden is perfect for families, especially in the Duplex Villas which are amazing!

The Water Garden at Sigiriya is a welcome new addition to the cultural triangle in Sri Lanka, but comes with the most magical view of the Lions Rock, which sets it apart from other hotels in the vicinity. With its fantastic Sri Lankan village feel, combined with its modern style of villas, it is a wonderful option to de-camp for a couple of nights. The Duplex Twin Villas are absolutely perfect for families, and even come with your own private plunge pool perfect for the children to take a dip in after a day of activities. The food is tasty, and offers a wide choice of both Sri Lankan style dishes and more international cuisine, and the service is attentive but not over bearing. All in all, it is a fantastic choice and I am confident that you will be extremely well looked after.
