From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. The sea stays at around 27°C all year. Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in the Northeastern half of Sri Lanka are from May to August and for the west and south coasts, December to March.
To start planning your vacation to Uga Bay
Uga Bay was one of the first hotels to establish itself on the stunning Pasikuda Bay on the east coast of Sri Lanka and is built to a very high standard. The hotel comprises of 48 spacious rooms, all facing out over the gardens or out to sea.
Pasikuda Bay has wide beaches of stunning white sand combined with shallow water without the strong currents of the south and west coast of Sri Lanka. Uga Bay makes the most of its prime location on the widest part of the beach. All buildings face towards the sea and the garden is landscaped to make the most of the open space.
An enormous infinity pool is the focal point of the resort with more than enough space to swim long lengths and relax poolside. Alternatively there are sun loungers on the beach and every room has its own balcony with seating.
The main rooms are situated in two-storey houses with two rooms on each floor. The upstairs rooms have the most uninterrupted views of the Bay of Bengal and if you can face it, the view of the sunrise is spectacular.
For those who are more active, there are water sports available in the bay. Please note that the water sports are independently run as a cooperative between neighboring hotels.
The food here is delicious and quite western in style and there is understandably a focus on seafood. Bread is freshly baked each day and was some of the best we tasted on our recent trip to Sri Lanka.
Uga Bay gives a contemporary twist to Sri Lanka, you will find the brightly colored silks are still used throughout to add to the modern twist created here. With 22 rooms on the ground floor which have beach access, and 22 rooms on the top floor with specular views either of the sea or of the gardens. For those wishing for more privacy there are the two story Beach House, Bay Suite and Beach Villa, all of which have their own private plunge pools and in-house dining rooms.
As the name suggests, the bay suite is a great place to stay if you are looking for easy access to the beach. An intimate and romantic hideaway with two bedrooms and separate living room as well as an open air plunge pool. Great place to stay with the family or for a romantic honeymoon.
The Beach Studio can be found in the main building on the ground floor. The highlight of staying in one of the Beach Studios is that they all have less than a minute’s walk to the beach. Each of these studio rooms have access to their own private terrace for you to enjoy a quiet moment. These stylish rooms give a contemporary feel with splashes of with the color schemes from Sri Lanka.
The ocean studios are located on the top half of the building and have clear views of the bay below. Sri Lanka blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world; why not admire it from the view of the bay your own exclusive room with an upper floor balcony?
The Beach villa in nothing short from exceptional. If what you are after is a little bit more privacy, it will be found here in the two-story villa by the sea. The Villa offers a picturesque view of the bay, a natural pond and plunge pool beside the terrace. The villa also has its own small living and dining area which is ideal for families.
Uga bay has a fine dining restaurant that is half indoors and half out. The restaurant also looks over the infinity pool that lights up at night for more of a romantic setting. Be sure to try the private dinning option, this is a great way to spend some one on one quality time with a loved one in one of the lovely settings available at Uga Bay. Expect fresh seafood with an Asian flair and feel comfortable to know all produce is locally grown on the island.
Uga Bay has plenty of watersports available including Jet Skis as well as an infinity pool. The resort does not fall short in providing all the necessary services to make the guests stay that much more special. Uga Bay has a luxurious underground spa with a clear view on the ocean the guest is able to see during the treatment to maximize a soothing relaxation.
Looking to provide a fantastic and unique experience for each guest, Uga Bay offers a variety of activities to fill the days with adventure. Not only are their incredible opportunities to go whale watching and snorkeling, there is also the opportunity to learn about the island by taking a cultural tour. The local area has plenty to keep the whole party entertained and create experiences that last a lifetime.

My stay at Uga Bat was so relaxing and lovely. Located on a long stretch of beach with super soft sand and calm seas it really is a fantastic spot to spend a couple of days. The set up of the rooms works really well providing lots of space and from my beach studio I could walk directly over the grounds and on to the beach which was fantastic.

Located on Passikudah beach, Uga Bay is in the perfect location to enjoy the wide sandy bay. The rooms are modern and offer either sea views or walking access to the beach and pool. Take your time here to relax and unwind on the beach or by the pool, then keep yourselves busy with water sports, spa treatments and excursions by bicycle or out onto the open sea in a catamaran. Make sure you take time to enjoy the sunset from the beach bar and indulge in the snack menu.

Ideal for families and the perfect way for rounding off a trip from west to east via the cultural triangle, Uga Bay is just 2 hours from Polonnaruwa. The rooms are bright and spacious and the beach is wide and sheltered from the strong Indian Ocean currents.

This luxury beach boutique is set amongst 10 acres of landscaped gardens and beautiful golden sand in the hamlet of Passikuda. The service is very personalized where staff are there to attend to your every need. With the long stretch of beach, clear water of the Indian Ocean and tranquil atmosphere it is the perfect setting to relax, unwind and indulge in a spot of luxury. It is the most well-rounded and luxurious option along the East Coast and possibly one of my favorite beach escapes in Sri Lanka.
