Bocas del Toro
Stretching from the forested slopes of the Talamanca Mountains to a series of magical islands, Bocas del Toro is located on the north Caribbean Coast of Panama. A jewel in Panama’s crown, the region boasts rainforest, mangrove and coral reef ecosystems, idyllic beaches, world-class surfing, and a fascinating Panamanian-Caribbean culture with a rich history.
The easiest base from which to explore Bocas del Toro is the provincial capital, Bocas Town. Located on the largest island, Isla Colón, Bocas is a friendly and relaxed small surfing town with a good selection of restaurants and cafés. From here the surrounding rainforest, mangrove forests, beaches and coral reefs can all be easily reached. The region includes Panama’s superb marine park, Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos, and the almost untouched ecosystems of the islands, islets, cays, mangroves, and rainforest make this one of the country’s top destinations for ecotourism.
Enjoy island hopping on traditional lanchas (motorised wooden boats) and relish the chance to relax amid the white sands, swaying palms, and marine-rich waters. The snorkeling in Parque Nacional Marino Isla Bastimentos is spectacular. Along with the colorful corals, look out for tropical reef creatures, sea turtles, manta rays, crab, and lobster. Hiking the rainforest is equally rewarding. Expect to spot tropical birds, sloths, howler monkeys, anteaters, and poison dart frogs.
Bocas is great for surfers with point breaks, reef breaks, beach breaks and gentle waves to suit all abilities. Divers can also tackle a range of dive spots including sunken ships, caves, ledges, and walls. Along with water activities, there’s cycling, horse riding, and yoga to enjoy. Home to several Ngobe Indian communities, it is possible to visit specific villages to learn more about their culture, customs and traditions, adding another dimension to this intriguing corner of Panama.
