To start planning your vacation to Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, Sultanate of Oman

Exclusively located on the bay at Barr Al Jissah, the Shangri-La nestles against the dramatic backdrop of the rugged interior mountains and the spectacular waters of the Gulf of Oman. The resort consists of two hotels: Al Waha and Al Bandar.

Located in the stunning surroundings of the bay at Barr al Jissah, this beach resort is a hugely popular option with families and built in a majestic Omani style and is set in 124 acres of landscaped gardens. It offers fantastic accommodation and facilities along with beautiful scenery and a large beach.

Throughout the resort, all rooms have private balconies, terraces or patios, and many have direct or partial sea-views. All spacious rooms are designed to reflect the enchanting Arabian spirit of traditional Oman, and feature artworks and imagery created by local artists. Amenities include complimentary broadband Internet access, flat screen TVs and DVD entertainment systems. Bathrooms feature baths, separate shower cubicles and Shangri La toiletries.

The resort complex comprises 15 restaurants and bars, a Chi Spa and large private beach. Facilities within the resort include two freshwater swimming pools, a fitness center, tennis courts, a dive center and a dedicated “Cool Zone” kids club.

Al Waha is the largest and most family friendly of the two hotels and is located closest to the Kids Club and children's pool. It is also the best option for those who require guaranteed interconnecting rooms. Al Bandar is also family friendly but is slightly more peaceful as it is situated further away from the specific children's facilities. The rooms are larger and the amenities are of a slightly higher standard.

I was lucky enough to stay in Al Husn, which definitely has an exclusive feel to it with its own private pool and beach, separating it from the rest of the resort. There are also loads of lovely added benefits, like a complimentary minibar with soft drinks, beer and snacks, complimentary afternoon tea, and complimentary pre-dinner drinks. The beds are also enormous and extremely comfortable, and the design of the rooms is very nice indeed.

The beach of Al Husn is fairly small, but actually in terms of 'sandiness', it is the best in Muscat. Its cove setting also gives you a more intimate experience versus the rest of the resort.

Al Waha and Al Bandar definitely feel busier and more geared towards families, and the rooms are more international rather than Arabian. But for couples or families looking for a comfortable room in a resort offering a plethora of facilities, they really are ideal.

Overall, the Shangri-La feels really good fun, whilst backing this up with great food and service. The size of resort is not going to be for everyone, but if you are looking for excellent facilities, plenty of restaurants choices, nice pools and a good beach, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

The Shangri La is the most accomplished beach resort in Muscat offering something for everyone between the three hotel sections of the resort. I stayed in Al Husn, the most grown up and exclusive section aimed predominantly at adults or those families with older children not requiring a kids club or connecting rooms. Guests here have access to the full range of restaurants and facilities across the resort whilst having their own private pool and beach away from the crowds at the rest of the hotel. For families there are two options available. The lead in Al Waha hotel has recently had its rooms refurbished and now looks clean and contemporary. Their Family rooms are ideal for as guarantee to connect and are very well located for the hotels childrens club and many swimming pools. The central Al Bandar area offers a level of service and luxury a step up from Al Waha whilst still offering suitable accommodation for families and is very much a Scott Dunn favorite. All round the Shangri-La is a great resort which offers excellent value for money making it perfect for some winter sun.

The Shangri-La is the resort that has pretty much everything in Muscat! With 3 hotels inside the resort catering for families with children to adults looking for a more club level experience perhaps for a honeymoon, all bases are covered. I really like the whole resorts and although its large, it doesn't feel impersonal and the staff are friendly and attentive. If you are traveling with children I'd suggest taking one of the pool view interconnecting rooms in Al Waha - ideally located to keep every one entertained!

Mr Edward Rudd (Guest)

We were very impressed with the ShangriLa and it was a very family friendly hotel, and even included a kids food bar for the buffet breakfast and dinner, which the kids loved!

Daniel Smith (Staff)

The Shangri-La was exactly how I expected. It is a very family friendly hotel and on arrival we were all made to feel incredibly welcome. The Hotel is located within its own bay on the Arabian Peninsula, known for its dramatic coastal landscape, and the three separate areas of the hotel stretch over 124 acres of distinct scenery. This is a large resort and is popular for family vacations or a couples relaxing retreat. There are a variety of restaurants and we had no real need to leave the hotel at an time. Having said this there is plenty to do and see close by including the Souk in the old city of Muttrah, or a visit to the Grand Mosque.
