Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

The Resurgence is a small, owner-run eco-lodge in a lovely rural location near the Abel Tasman National Park in the northern stretch of South Island. An ideal base for enjoying the great outdoors and day trips on the coast which is just ten minutes away.

Tucked into the green hills just inland from the Abel Tasman National Park, The Resurgence is a family-run lodge with just ten rooms. Enjoy tranquil, rural surroundings and five kilometers of tracks to explore on foot or bike, including the natural spring which has resurged from underground, after which the lodge was named. This is a peaceful spot to base yourself for exploring the area, and an equally lovely place to start or end your New Zealand adventures for a bit of rest and relaxation.

There are four rooms in the main building, and six cottages dotted around the gardens. All are well appointed and make the most of the views with big windows and the main lodge rooms have access to a shared balcony. The cottages are made up of three bush chalets and three bush lodges, each with a kitchenette, barbecue on deck, and the bush lodges also have a lounge with fireplace and outside bathtub.

Local, fresh food is a real focus here, and many of the vegetables served are grown in the veggie patch here. Owner Clare and her nephew Sam are the cooks, serving up delicious farmhouse breakfasts each morning and four course dinners each evening.

Whilst not actually on the coast, this is a good base for exploring the area, both inland and on the water, and there’s enough to do here to keep you busy for several days. You can enjoy jogging or walking on the property, borrow bikes to explore further afield, work out in the gym or have a massage treatment if you’d rather take it easy. One of the best ways to explore the Abel Tasman is by kayak, and we’d recommend pre-booking a half or full day trip at some point during your stay to explore the pretty shoreline and tiny coves. Other activities include horse riding, boat trips and scenic helicopter flights for a real treat.
