The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.
To start planning your vacation to Poronui Luxury Lodge
Poronui, a luxury fly fishing lodge, is situated in the secluded Taharua Valley in the center of New Zealand's North Island.
Supremely situated on 16,000 acres of farmland, Poronui has three authentic, world-class accommodation options: the legendary lodge, the rustic Safari Camp and the stately Blake House.
This once rustic fishing camp has evolved into one of the world's premier sporting lodges. The lodge is the spiritual center of Poronui with very comfortable communal amenities. Seven free standing guest cabins surround these. Each of these rooms have balconies overlooking the Taharua River, comfortable accommodation and warming sitting rooms with open fires.
Blake House is situated on an imperious plateau overlooking the Taharua River. Designed by prominent New Zealand architect, John Blair, Blake House honours the region's architectural traditions, while offering a considerable step up in scale and comfort. It features four en-suite double bedrooms and an eight bed bunk room, ideal for larger families with children. Around the communal dining table, you can enjoy superb meals of local game prepared by Poronui's expert chefs.
Poronui's luxury safari camp offers an incredibly authentic outdoor experience with comfortable modern day pleasures. The original Poronui anglers would have to trek long distances to reach the Safari camp but a track has now been drawn out. The camp has two accommodation tents, both with separate amenities and although you are in a remote location, your meals will be fit for a King.
The Stables are located not too far from the main lodge, and riding is on offer for people at all levels. The Stables are also home to the dining room in the midst of a 10,000 wine cellar and also the outdoor dining table and outdoor barbecue which offers for a memorable experience too. There is a large sitting room with a large screen TV, gym, sauna and massage table which are also located in the Stable block if guests wish to use these.
There are 3 accommodation options: Poronui Lodge, the Safari Camp or Blake House.
The Stables is a modern center containing a gym and health club facilities.
The lodge kitchen serves outstanding food and wine. Much of the food is sourced from the property or the surrounding areas. The Stables also houses the outdoor barbecue area.
There are plenty of activiites to take part in whilst at Poronui from mountain biking through the 200km of trails around the property; hunting; horse-riding for all levels, from beginners through to experienced riders; guided walks and hikes; field archery and target shooting in the Olympic standard sporting clays course; and Maoritanga, a unique cultural experience with Tom Loughlin.

Set in 16,000 acres close to Lake Taupo, Poronui is a rustic style fishing lodge run by the magical Eve and her team. This is not a luxury chic lodge by any standards but a home from home comprising the main lodge with seven comfortable bedrooms overlooking the river, Blake House which has four bedrooms set in the middle of the estate which is perfect for families and Safari Lodge which comprises two canvas style tents on the edge of a tumbling river way into the countryside and surrounded by fabulous countryside. Poronui is about the welcome, fishing on the river, riding through their beautiful estate from their own stables, walking, hiking, trying out their archery course or learning to clay pigeon shoot. The games room by the stables along with the wine cellar is wonderful and a perfect trap to entertain teenagers and Blake House a great spot to hunker down in a gracious but rustic space and enjoy the feeling of being in a real outback location. Eve and her guides can fill your days with anything and everything and you will dine on the most delicious home made cooking that is anything but simple!
