Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Insider's View

The beds here at Delamore Lodge are the most comfortable I have ever slept in, with luxurious linen and possum fur throws adorning the beds, topped off with beautiful views out to sea.

Enjoy a Glass of Chardonnay after a long walk along their coastal paths. After all you are on the ‘Island of Wine’. I recommend a lunch at Mud Brick, it’s great.

Take a visit to one of the many vineyards on the island. You can hire a driver, allowing you to take full advantage of this!

To start planning your vacation to Delamore Lodge

Delamore Lodge, the last word in style, privacy and sophistication, is located on a cliff edge on the ‘Island of Wine’, Waiheke, in New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf. Here you will find sensational beaches, fabulous restaurants and world-renowned vineyards.

Located only 30 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland (or 5 minutes by helicopter), the design of Delamore Lodge is inspired by the Mediterranean and is shaped like a Maori fish hook, with stunning panoramic views over the traditional fishing grounds of Owhanake Beach out to the Pacific Ocean.

Each of the four guest suites has a private patio and panoramic views, even from the bath. Organic spa treatments (some developed on Waiheke Island) can be arranged in the purpose built spa suite, to relax and revive after a day exploring this stunning island and its bounty. The chefs here at Delamore delight in the superb local produce, from Helio stone-oven breads, Rangihoua olive oil and oysters from Te Matukua Bay, to fish straight from the boat and fantastic meat from the local butcher.

Delamore Lodge offers a spacious guest lounge, central courtyard with a sweeping stairway linking the tropical rockpool and waterfall, a deep, cave-like Jacuzzi, a sauna, wellbeing center and a wine cellar stocked with the very best selection from 30 local vineyards and New Zealand’s regional best. The courtyard then cascades into the striking, Italian-style fireplace and outdoor dining area. Delamore’s infinity pool leads up to a superb all-weather pavilion named the Wharenui, with 180-degree cliff top views of the South Pacific.

Delamore Lodge is not suitable for children under the age of 12 years unless all of the suites are booked by one party. For families with older children, this is a wonderful place to stay and active outdoor children will love the huge range of activities on offer from kayaking to horse riding to swimming.

Food and wine are central to the Delamore Lodge experience and gourmet breakfasts are served on the terrace or in your suite. Lunch platters can be arranged if you are not out for the day and dinners are also a very tailor made experience, perhaps even incorporating your own fishing catch. A range of wonderful treatments from reflexology to massage to reiki can be enjoyed in your suite or in the indulgent spa which also has a sauna and Jacuzzi, and there is a stunning infinity pool.

For water lovers there is swimming, diving, kayaking, fishing and sailing, On land enjoy the many beaches, golf, horse riding, galleries, restaurants, cafes, bars, vineyards and olive groves. The location of this property is pretty breathtaking, enjoying uninterrupted views out to sea. With 8 acres and just 5 rooms it is incredibly spacious and exclusive. The owner has a passion for interiors and travel, so has beautifully designed the property in fashionable furnishings from all over the world. The swimming pool takes full advantage of the location and views and is one of the few hotels on the island to have a pool. The one bedroom suites all enjoy their own balcony, to soak up the views and tranquillity of the island.

Set right on the peninsula of Waiheke, overlooking the fishing grounds of Owhanake Bay, Delamore is a small boutique option with four luxurious suites, all with private patios and panoramic views out to sea. The outdoor/indoor dining area is extremely homely. The owner has acquired the beautiful furniture from all over the world to give it a very stylish, unique look. Having their own helipad, spa and cave like Jacuzzi, this sets them apart from other lodges on Waiheke.

I absolutely adore Waiheke Island, with its 'Padstow meets Byron Bay' vibe and stunning views and it really is the ultimate island getaway with a difference, just 30 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland. Arriving at Delamore, I was struck by how sympathetically the lodge has been almost carved out of the landscape, with a wonderfully warm, almost cave-like feel to the property that is reflected in the natural, warm colors that furnish each area. Delamore Lodge is only small and is positioned to take advantage of the incredible views over Owhanake Bay out to Rakino Island and the ocean beyond. My bed here at Delamore is without doubt the most comfortable I have ever slept in and the baths with windows that draw back to take in the views are a wonderful touch. Add to this the infinity pool, spa pool and stunning food, and you have a recipe for the most fabulous hideaway on New Zealand's 'island of wine'.
