Head to the city's southern neighbourhoods for a glimpse into the turbulent lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, two of Mexico's most iconic artists, sample mouthwatering Mexican cuisine at the vibrant markets and lose yourself in a maze of cobblestone streets and impressive remains from the days of the Mayan and Aztec empires.
Thirty miles away lie the ruins of Teotihuacan, one of the largest cities of the ancient world. Dating back to 200 BC, this intriguing complex of pyramids and chambers is still being excavated today and makes for a perfect stop on route to explore Mexico's central highlands.
