Bromo
The epic lunar-like walls of Mount Bromo and its neighboring volcanoes, Kursi and Batok, rise from the vast crater, an occasional wisp of smoke and the ashen landscape a reminder of the power of this deceptively beautiful region. This is best visited at sunrise, when the morning light softens the rugged peaks and the mists blanket the surrounding rice fields.
Watching the sunrise from the rim of Mount Penanjakan is worth the early start, while climbing up to the rim of Mount Bromo takes you closer to this sleeping giant, and affords spectacular views of the encircling peaks.
