Pingyao
UNESCO listed Pingyao is the jewel of Shanxi province. Founded in the 14th century by the Han dynasty, Pingyao is China’s best surviving example of an ancient walled town. Intricately carved courtyard dwellings line the warren of alleyways, lit at night with red lanterns, remaining almost unchanged since the time they were built.
The ancient and utterly charming town of Pingyao is a must-see for any discerning traveler. Laid out according to the ancient principles of Feng Shui, this is a charismatic community of flat-roofed farmhouses and Qing-era courtyard houses with their wave-like wooden roofs.
