The Pantanal has two distinct seasons, dry and wet. During the wet season (November-April) guests will find the region in bloom, with lush vegetation and flowers, however the rains can make some areas tricky to reach, it is very hot and humid and some lodges do close at this time. We feel the best time to visit is during the dry season (May - October), which is the peak season for viewing wildlife, when rare species of birds and other animals seek shelter along the riverbanks and can be observed more easily.

Barra Mansa is a simple but charming family-run lodge with very personalized service offering fully private excursions to explore the unique flora and fauna in Brazil's Pantanal, one of the most wildlife-rich and top preserved eco-systems on earth.
Barra Mansa is strategically located in the Pantanal, at the confluence of the Vazante do Castelo and Negro rivers, 225km from Campo Grande. The lodge was created in the 1940s as a cattle-breeding ranch. In 1996, the grandson of the original settler set up an eco-tourism project at the ranch.
The main farmhouse has beautiful views of the river and the guest rooms have screened windows, air-conditioning and verandas. The maximum capacity is for 17 guests, which assures a personalized service and extreme privacy. The restaurant serves delicious local cuisine cooked in a wood stove and the chef is very happy to take suggestions from guests.
Activities on offer at Barra Mansa include sport fishing, guided excursions to see the surrounding flora and fauna, horse riding and bird watching. The guides at Barra Mansa are all locals and carry years of experience so you'll be in good hands. The outside hammock area is the prefect place to relax and unwind after a day exploring one of the most diverse eco-systems in the world.
Accommodation at Barra Mansa is in simple guest rooms, sleeping between two to four guests. All rooms have screened windows, air conditioning and ceiling fan. The lodge's maximum capacity is 17 guests.
Children of all ages are welcome at Barra Mansa although due to the length of the transfer to the lodge and the nature of the excursions we would not especially recommend it for very young children. Older children are sure to enjoy the adventurous nature of a stay in the Pantanal and looking out for the local wildlife.
Facilities at Barra Mansa include a restaurant, bar, outside hammock area, fishing equipment for rent and a private landing strip.
Guests at Barra Mansa are wonderfully located for exploring the wonders of the Brazilian Pantanal and activities on offer include horseback riding, boat trips, canoeing, hiking, fishing, and safari.

Although there is no getting away from the fact that Barra Mansa is simple, this is a wonderful place for experiencing the Pantanal. I loved the fact that it is one of the oldest-established properties, having been in the family for generations, and you really get a sense that you are living and breathing the Pantanal here. In the evenings, after a fantastic day's safari, you can swap stories with your fellow guests over dinner, and there are lots of books about the wildlife and history of the area to peruse.
Pantanal by Canadian Canoe
Take a relaxing canoe ride to discover the surrounding riverside forest and find your own silent paradise! Silently glide along the river banks for your best chance to see wildlife along the way. Even do some Piranha fishing!
Pantanal Horesback Riding Adventure
Take a Horseback tour and acquaint yourself with the Pantanal in the most traditional way, exploring the open-grassland and forest. Get a different vantage point on horseback as you discover this fascinating and unique landscape.
