Our Pick of The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026

Cascading tiers of glass and greenery step down to the water's edge here, and the effect is disarming: you forget entirely that one of Southeast Asia's busiest cities is humming away just beyond the walls. Interconnected courtyards and seamless indoor-outdoor living give the hotel the feel of a private residence rather than a riverside address, and that river is very much the point. Step onto the Four Seasons' own boat and the Chao Phraya opens up into a quieter Bangkok: waterside temples, wooden houses on stilts, narrow canals that most visitors never see.

An 18th-century villa on the shore of Lake Como, painstakingly restored down to its last cornice, Passalacqua has held onto its Best Boutique Hotel title for a second year running. The house once entertained Bellini, Napoleon and Churchill, and it still carries that sense of occasion, but nothing here feels like a museum piece. It's Italian living at its most nostalgic and least hurried, all lake light and old stone.

Once a working hacienda deep in the Yucatán jungle, Chablé has been reimagined as a wellness retreat without losing the bones of what it was. Contemporary villas sit scattered through palm-lined grounds, and its Mayan-inspired treatment programs - the reason it also picked up this year's Eco Hotel award - are some of the most thoughtful spa experiences we've come across anywhere in Mexico.

Occupying the top floors of the Otemachi Tower, Aman Tokyo turns the idea of a city hotel inside out. The lobby rises almost thirty meters, its ceiling built from washi paper, ikebana arrangements set against still water, engawa platforms marking the line between inside and out. Kerry Hill's design leans on basalt stone, cypress wood and paper rather than glass and marble, and the result is somewhere that feels genuinely serene despite sitting meters from the Imperial Palace Gardens and the pulse of Tokyo's financial district.

Capella's home is a heritage-listed Edwardian Baroque sandstone building, once the city's Department of Education, designed by the same architect behind Sydney Town Hall. The restoration is a masterclass in restraint - golden stone facades left largely untouched, contemporary interiors layered in without shouting over them. It's a five-minute walk from the Harbor, and easily one of the most considered hotel transformations we've seen in Australia.

Built as a series of private riads rather than conventional rooms, Royal Mansour is Moroccan craftsmanship taken to its furthest extreme - hand-cut tilework, hidden courtyards, gardens that feel like they've been growing for centuries. What we love most, though, is what you don't see: an entire network of underground tunnels lets staff move unseen, so service arrives exactly when needed and never before.

Standing over the Arabian Sea beside the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace is the flagship of the Taj Group and, in many ways, of Indian hospitality itself. Soaring staircases, handwoven silks and chandeliers that catch the sea light all speak to a grandeur that's more than a century old, yet it never feels frozen in time - a contemporary hand runs through every corner of it.

Known locally as "the Nellie," Mount Nelson has watched over Cape Town from the foot of Table Mountain since 1899, its facade painted the same shade of pink since 1918. Nine acres of gardens surround it, rose-scented and shaded, and the guestbook reads like a century of history - Churchill, John Lennon, the Dalai Lama all passed through. It's proof that a grand old hotel can still feel like the beating heart of a city rather than a relic of one.

Sumba remains one of the most remote and unspoiled islands in Indonesia, and Nihi has built its 567-acre estate to match - thatched villas on a rocky hillside, stone paths, outdoor showers, nothing that asks to compete with the landscape. Its real claim to fame sits just offshore: Occy's Left, a world-class surf break so prized that only a handful of surfers are allowed on it each day. For everyone else, there are horseback rides along the beach and the Spa Safari, a day-long journey by jeep and foot into a hidden valley of open-air treatment pavilions.
