West coast beaches and islands
Famed for its clear waters, the west coast of Thailand is a haven for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. Phuket Island is an international resort connected to the mainland by a causeway, and is home to some of the most exclusive hotels in Thailand. On the mainland, Khao Lak is a peaceful destination with three national parks and hills that sweep down to the wonderful coastline.
Almost 80% of Phuket is mountainous, with dense forests and nature reserves, whilst the beaches are idyllic and its beaches stretching for miles. The classic image of a Thai beach originates from the island of Krabi, known as "the emerald of the Andaman Sea", with towering limestone cliffs and outstanding natural beauty. Nearby, Koh Lanta island has similar scenery but is less developed, with deserted beaches and a dense rainforest interior.
