Méribel Centre is where the resort's pulse beats loudest, with ski shops giving way to Savoyard restaurants as the Chaudanne fills with the last skiers of the day queuing for a vin chaud before heading in for the evening.
Next to the Chaudanne, the Olympic Park keeps things going long after the lifts close: six bowling lanes, a games arcade, air hockey and a sports bar for the big matches, plus a pool, an ice rink and a cinema showing English-language films two or three times a week. A five-minute drive down the valley from the Chaudanne, Méribel Village is where the buzz of the resort gives way to storybook landscapes. Chalets and converted barns gathered around a small square, built from the same stone and timber as the centre but with none of the queues. The Golf chairlift lifts you straight onto the Altiport slopes, so the skiing is minutes away, while evenings mean a fire and a quiet terrace rather than a crowded one. It's a match for couples who want the Trois Vallées on their doorstep without living on top of it, with a bakery, a bar or two and Méribel's full high street just a short hop away whenever it's wanted.
Higher up the valley at around 1,700 metres, Méribel-Mottaret trades the bustle of the centre for snow that holds well into spring and pistes that start at your front door. Built in the 1970s but kept to the same chalet style as the rest of the resort, it's largely car-free, so skis go on the moment you step outside and come off again right where you're staying. It suits keen skiers who'd rather spend an extra hour on the mountain than in a bar, with fast lifts on to Courchevel and Val Thorens for those who've covered every run closer to home.
The ski season runs from December to April, with January to March boasting the most snow-sure conditions. April offers milder temperatures and provides the opportunity to ride the mountains in the spring sunshine. Christmas, New Year and school holidays always prove to be popular times to visit the resort so it's worth planning your trip outside of these times if you prefer quieter slopes.
