Highlights
Simple decor lends itself to the beauty of the natural surroundings
Mouth-watering Swedish delicacies are served up courtesy of Sörbyn Lodge's chef
Cross frozen lakes on snowmobile or venture out at night to spot the Northern Lights
Perched on the edge of Lake Vitträsket, the views here are simply breath-taking
The setting of this family run property at the edge of Lake Vitträsket is magical. The lake freezes over in winter and the trees are decked out in twinkling lights. Coffee is perpetually being brewed and little homemade biscuits being proffered. Sörbyn Lodge has rustic charm in spades with its simple rooms, charming staff, and a very talented resident chef.
Which brings us to the food, which is the real surprise here. The creativity and skill that the chef invests in his dishes are at odds with the simple design of the lodge but it is the highlight of any stay here. He goes to great lengths to source the freshest of ingredients as locally as possible, visiting each supplier himself so as to ensure quality. The end result are visually beautiful dishes that taste as good as they look - parsnip soup with smoked moose garnished with deep fried lichen; Vendace roe and Artic char on a bed of soy lentils; local lamb with a chanterelle and cep sauce. Guests can venture out on a forage run with the chef or even don an apron to learn from the man himself.
Sörbyn Lodge's location lends itself well to a winter activity holiday for adults and children alike. Set off on a thrilling snow-mobile ride that can have you crossing frozen lakes at speed; or opt for a slower and more natural mode of transport behind a husky drawn sleigh. Go for a bracing walk in the evening when the sky is dark and the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are high or enrol in a cooking class with the chef to try your hand at deep frying lichen!
This simple and homely place is the perfect place to relax and unwind and feast on great food but is equally perfect for those keen to get out and about to play in the snow. It works very well when combined with Aurora Safari Camp for a reintroduction to en-suite facilities!
