Meet your host at a startup incubator, home to Sri Lanka’s latest innovations, from 3D printing to sustainable packaging. Hop on a tuk-tuk from here to a Hindu Kovil (temple), admiring the impressive carved stone characters and learning about the religious rituals that worshippers perform. From one prayer house to another, visit St Anthony’s Church, hearing stories from its early years during the Dutch colonial period.
Continue on foot to the Fort Pettah bazaar where your host will navigate you through the hustle and bustle to a 150 year old teashop that is buzzing with life. Highly popular with locals, stop for a cup of tea and some people watching. Venture past the old town hall and the Red Mosque, whose ornate design is truly unique. Reaching the ocean, you’ll see couples and families gathering to enjoy the sunset together.
From here you have a choice, depending on your energy levels. The first option is Aluth Kade, a lane filled with street food of every flavour and variety, from kottus to prawn wadey. This is a feast for the senses, and your host will help you find some delicious local bites. Or, for something more sedate, stop at the historic Nippon Hotel for a taste of arrack spirits and a platter of local snacks. This experience concludes around 7pm, when you can return to your hotel or find a spot for dinner if your appetite allows.
