Day 1 | Embark in Athens
Your journey begins in one of the world's great cities, where the foundations of Western civilisation were laid more than two millennia ago. The Acropolis is quite simply unmissable: the Parthenon's towering columns remain one of antiquity's most breathtaking achievements, whilst the delicate Temple of Nike and the caryatid figures of the Erechtheion speak to an artistic tradition of extraordinary refinement. Wander the Agora, where Socrates once debated and Pericles held court, before retreating to the Plaka neighbourhood for an evening of taverna dining amongst winding lanes and convivial Athenian warmth.
Day 2 | Amorgos
Fashionable yet wonderfully unhurried, Amorgos sits in the eastern Cyclades like a well-kept secret. Its beaches are beautifully secluded, many accessible only by foot or by boat. The extraordinary Monastery of Hozoviotissa clings to a sheer cliff face some three hundred metres above the Aegean in a manner that feels genuinely miraculous. The hilltop town of Hora, with its whitewashed buildings and labyrinthine lanes, rewards an afternoon's exploration, whilst the harbours of Katapola and Aigiali offer excellent taverna dining as evening falls.
Day 3 | Rhodes
The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes blends glorious beaches with one of the most compelling medieval townscapes in the Mediterranean. The Knights Hospitaller left an extraordinary legacy here, and the Old Town's cobbled streets reveal Gothic, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture in surprisingly harmonious company. Further along the coast, the hilltop acropolis at Lindos commands sweeping views across the Aegean, whilst the village below offers excellent local cooking enjoyed in the shade of its charming main square.
Day 4 | Bodrum
Crossing to Turkey's sun-warmed Aegean coast, Bodrum wears its many pleasures lightly. Traditional wooden gulet boats offer a romantic means of exploring hidden coves where the water shimmers in extraordinary shades of turquoise. The fifteenth century Castle of St Peter presides over a neighbourhood of narrow cobbled lanes and artisan workshops, whilst to the west a handsome marina anchors an elegant quarter of stylish boutiques and restaurants well suited to a long and unhurried afternoon.
Day 5 | Patmos
Few islands carry quite the significance of Patmos, where St John is said to have written the Book of Revelation whilst in exile. The great Monastery of St John the Theologian crowns the hilltop, its fortress-like walls enclosing centuries of history, whilst the nearby Cave of the Apocalypse inspires quiet reverence. The pretty port of Skála offers a more earthly pleasure, with its natural harbour providing a welcoming setting for swimming and dining, and peaceful coves along the coastline offering ample opportunity for solitude.
Day 6 | Santorini
Be certain to be on deck as Ilma sails into Santorini's volcanic caldera, for it is one of the great spectacles of Mediterranean travel. The ancient rock walls rise dramatically from the sea before giving way to whitewashed villages perched along the rim. The Caldera Trail from Fira to Oia offers breathtaking perspectives at every turn, whilst the Minoan ruins of Akrotiri and the island's distinctive wineries provide further reward. Settle into a clifftop taverna with a glass of local assyrtiko and watch the sun descend in a blaze of colour.
Day 7 | Milos
Geographically extraordinary and culturally rich, Milos is unlike any other island in the Cyclades. Its volcanic origins have sculpted a coastline of remarkable variety, from thermal springs and unusual rock formations to a succession of beautiful beaches. The hilltop capital of Plaka offers sweeping views and an excellent archaeological museum, home to a replica of the celebrated Venus of Milo. Before you sail, sample the island's culinary curiosities: watermelon pie and white pumpkin confections are among the more unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable discoveries Milos has to offer.

Greece is a summer destination, and typically the best time to visit is between late April to late October. On average, the warmest months of the year are July and August, when the beaches and towns are more crowded with other visitors. June and September are good months to visit, when the villages are quieter but temperatures are still very pleasant. Rain is unlikely during the high summer but occasional storms occur in the late summer.
