The Sarai at Toria is the creation of husband-and-wife duo Joanna and Raghu, a conservationist and a wildlife biologist, whose shared passion for nature, community, and food forms the heart of this remarkable property. Their vision was to create a place that celebrates the beauty of rural India while protecting it, and they’ve done so with effortless charm.
Nestled on the banks of the Ken River, the lodge offers sweeping views across unspoilt countryside, where riverine forests give way to open fields alive with birdsong. The cottages, built entirely from natural materials using local techniques, combine rustic simplicity with comfort. Thick mud walls keep interiors cool, while thatched roofs and handmade furnishings lend an authentic village aesthetic.
Days at The Sarai at Toria unfold at an easy pace. Spend quiet hours birdwatching from the deck, reading in the dappled shade of the trees, or joining Joanna and Raghu for stories over a home-cooked meal prepared with fresh, organic ingredients. For those eager to explore, boat trips on the Ken River, guided village walks, and safaris into nearby Panna National Park are all on offer, just a short 5-minute drive away.
Evenings are particularly special here. Guests gather by lantern light to share tales of the day, dine alfresco under the stars, and savour the feeling of being completely immersed in nature, with the comforting sense of being part of something meaningful.
