Highlights
Iconic clifftop grande dame overlooking the Atlantic, surrounded by 10 acres of subtropical gardens.
Three swimming pools (including sea-water and heated options), oceanfront spa and direct access to the sea.
Refined dining with classic afternoon tea, gourmet restaurants and an extensive Madeiran wine selection.
Impeccable Belmond service, elegant rooms and suites, and a timeless atmosphere steeped in island history.
Set high on a rocky promontory above the Atlantic, Reid’s Palace, A Belmond Hotel is Madeira’s original grande dame – a pastel-pink landmark cocooned in 10 acres of subtropical gardens overlooking Funchal bay. Just a few minutes from the old town and marina, it offers easy access to the island’s restaurants, levada walks and whale-watching excursions, yet feels wonderfully private and serene when you return.
Inside, the hotel blends old-world glamour with contemporary comfort. With 126 rooms and suites, there is plenty of choice for both couples and families, from Classic Rooms with partial sea views to elegant Deluxe Rooms positioned in the most sought-after corners of the building. Many feature balconies or terraces for private breakfasts in the sun or lingering evening drinks as the lights of Funchal twinkle below. Suites add generous sitting areas, marble bathrooms with separate bathtub and shower, and in some cases kitchenettes and expansive decks – perfect if you are travelling with children or simply want more space to unwind.
Days here naturally drift between sea and sky. Three swimming pools – including heated and salt-water options – are scattered across the terraces, while lifts and steps lead down to platforms at the ocean’s edge for swimming directly in the Atlantic. The oceanfront spa offers a calming retreat with treatment rooms and a menu of massages and facials, and there is also a well-equipped fitness centre if you like to keep active on holiday. Younger guests are well looked after with family-friendly rooms and plenty of space to explore the gardens.
Dining is a highlight. You can start the day with an abundant breakfast on the terrace, pause for cocktails by the pool and end with a lingering dinner of fresh local seafood and modern Mediterranean dishes, paired with excellent Madeiran wines. The hotel’s traditional afternoon tea – served on starched linen with views over the bay – is almost a rite of passage on the island. With its impeccable service, sense of history and spectacular setting, Reid’s Palace is a wonderful choice for a relaxed yet indulgent escape to Madeira.
