With all the natural and wildlife ingredients to create memorable Alaskan adventures, Tutka Bay Lodge makes a great base for enjoying a whole range of outdoor activities. Suitable for all ages and abilities, most activities are included. With direct access to Tutka Bay, guests can try guided tide pooling and beachcombing along the shoreline and sea kayaking, scouting for seabirds, sea otters and even passing whales. The birdwatching is superb and during the summer months guests can take a boat trip to Gull Island. Home to around 15,000 birds, expect to see cormorants, guillemots, and puffins among many others.
Hikers will be in their element with a wide choice of hikes on the doorstep. These include a 2-mile trail through atmospheric old-growth forest which meanders along the coastline. Or sign up for the Tutka Lagoon Trail, involving a 2-hour hike through the bay’s forest lagoon up to a waterfall. For longer hikes, a short boat trip to Kayak Beach is the start point for the ascent of Grace Ridge for glorious views of the Herring Islands, Kachemak Bay and surrounding fjords.
Also included is either a bear watching or deep-sea fishing experience. Bear watching is a chance to see coastal brown bears grazing along the shoreline and in sedge grass fields. A 60-minute flight takes you to the bears’ location for a 3-hour coastline hike. The journey there and back also provides a fabulous flightseeing experience over the dramatic volcanic and glacier scenery. Alternatively, guests can opt to enjoy a deep-sea fishing trip for salmon and/or halibut for either a half or full day. Additional fishing days can also be added on request.
With a local history of Native Alaskan settlements, fishing communities and intrepid pioneers, guests can also learn more about the culture of the area with a guided tour of Seldovia, Yukon Island and the Herrings Islands. For more relaxing pursuits, the lodge offers complimentary massage, yoga sessions on the deck and a daily 50-minute cooking class.
