Nestled along the Tambopata River in southeastern Peru, Refugio Amazonas offers a rare gateway into untouched rainforest — where rustic comfort meets authentic jungle adventure. After a short journey from Puerto Maldonado by road and boat, you arrive at a lodge built from native wood, bamboo and palm thatch, set among 200 hectares of chestnut forest in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve.

Rooms are simple yet inviting: wooden bungalows with a wall open to the forest, mosquito-netted beds, private hot-water bathrooms and verandas from which you may glimpse monkeys, parrots or caimans at water’s edge.

Days unfold with possibility: ascend the 30-metre canopy tower for sweeping treetop views and birdlife sightings; paddle catamarans on oxbow lakes; observe colourful macaws descending to clay licks at sunrise; or walk trails at night under soft lantern light, when glowing insects stir and nocturnal creatures emerge.

Back at the lodge, enjoy delicious buffet-style meals, share stories with local guides, or unwind with a massage in the wellness centre — all within the ambient bouquet of the forest.
