Meaning Hot Water River, Kawayu is a small onsen resort within the Akan Mashu National Park, offering a relaxing base for exploring Lakes Mashu and Kussharo, Mount Iozan and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails. Stay in a traditional ryokan with hot spring baths or join the hundreds of bathers at the spectacular open-air Senninburo Bath in the middle of the Oto-gawa River.

The local Eco Museum has plenty of interesting information about the area and the beautiful mossy forest trails of the park, while sumo wrestling fans will not want to miss a chance to visit the local Sumo Museum dedicated to Taiho, Kawayu’s champion wrestler. A lovely area to relax and explore, Kawayu is a popular destination for locals and visitors.
