Calcutta and northeast India
Long considered to be the cultural capital of India, Calcutta’s local Bengali people are known for their humour, art, poetry and politics. Calcutta also has the finest remnants of colonial architecture in the country. The remarkable north-east region of India is often overlooked, however a journey here is well rewarded with the magical states of Assam and Nagaland being particular highlights.
A visit here can be an extremely rewarding and insightful experience. As you move into India's north-east region you come across the state of Assam with the mighty Brahmaputra River running through it. Explore the National Park of Kazaranga where you have the best opportunity to spot rhino in the wild, as well as seeing the Royal Bengal Tiger. You can also explore the lesser visited areas of the north-east such as Nagaland, Shillong and Arunachal Pradesh.
