From the Central Valley you head east across the Continental Divide down to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast. Tortuguero is best known as one of the most important egg-laying places for Green Turtles from July to December nevertheless it teams with wildlife year-round. Surround yourself in jungle and keep your eyes peeled for the various monkey species, sloths, reptiles, amphibians and numerous tropical birds. Board a boat on the neighbouring canals and waterways and embark on day and night hikes with specialist naturalist guides, who will impart their expert knowledge of Tortuguero’s wonderful flora and fauna. In turtle laying and hatching seasons, nests are carefully monitored, but guests can visit with the National Park guides.

This morning, enjoy a private transfer along the coast to Manuel Antonio, a national park that has been popular for many years now and with good reason. Included in your stay is a guided tour through Manuel Antonio National Park, where you’ll observe sloths hanging in the trees, share the beach with monkeys and iguanas and the can take a dip in the ocean, which is suitable even for young or less confident swimmers. We recommend using Manuel Antonio as a base to explore this stretch of Pacific coastline. Tours and activities offered include white water rafting, mangrove kayaking and boat tours, guided rainforest hikes, ocean kayaking, catch and release sport fishing, canopy tours and horseback riding excursions. Costa Rica’s Central Valley enjoys a spring-like climate year round. In the tropical coastal areas the temperature is very warm and humid. Much of Costa Rica is covered by rainforest so expect rain at any time, but the drier season on the Pacific coast and Central Valley is from December to April and the rainier ‘green’ season is from May to November with the heaviest rainfall being in September and October. Christmas, New Year and Easter are incredibly popular so it is best to book well in advance.
Tortuguero can be visited year round for wildlife. The Green Sea and Hawksbill turtle’s nesting season runs from July to October with the peak in August, and the Leatherback turtles nest from February to April. The Caribbean side of the Cordillera Central has a different weather pattern to the Pacific. Tortuguero’s ‘drier’ season is February to June and September and October however being tropical please expect showers at any time.
