Description

Begin your holiday with a short flight from Dar es Salaam by light aircraft to Ras Kutani. Relaxation is absolutely the name of the game here and the spacious and stylish rooms are the perfect place to kick back. Rooms overlook either the lagoon or the beach, which stretches into the distance. Watersports equipment is available, including kayaks for use on the lagoon and horse riding on the beach can be arranged nearby.

You will then fly via Dar es Salaam to the heart of the Selous, Africa’s largest protected wildlife area. Characterised by lakes, rivers and forests. With the mighty Rufiji flowing majestically through it, the Selous is a stunning reserve even by the high standards of Tanzania’s landscapes. As well as game drives, visitors can enjoy walking, fly camping and boating, for a close up view of large predators and herbivores alike.

From the Selous you fly, via Dar es Salaam, to the remote island of Pemba. Fundu Lagoon has just 18 rooms and suites dotted along the beach and up the hillside overlooking the sea, all linked by rustic wooden walkways. Each has its own en-suite bathroom and private deck, which makes a perfect spot to sit and sip a sundowner while watching the sunset. There is superb diving nearby at Misali Island as well as snorkelling. The lodge runs a twice-daily boat shuttle to the island and guests are welcome to take a picnic and just chill on the beach or explore the island. They also have kayaks for exploring the mangroves around the lodge and a traditional sailing dhow, which is often taken out in the evening for a little sunset cruise. There's a pool above the resort with its own bar and a couple of rooms for massage treatments and also a jetty bar, which is popular in the evenings for a pre- or post-dinner drink with other guests. Often, tempting seafood canapés will be made from something one of the guests has caught during the day.

When to travel

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit. The wildebeest migration happens most of year in Tanzania's Serengeti, and is linked to the rainfall.
