Description
This journey uses the best hotels where possible, but also delves into Jordan’s interior before retreating back to comfortable accommodation. You will have the flexibility of your driver, being able to stop at various sites along the route.
Your journey begins in Amman in the de luxe Four Seasons hotel. Amman is an excellent base to do trips to Jerash and Umm Qais, where the classical remains are such that any observer cannot fail to be impressed by what stands before them.
Other excursions that can be taken from Amman are the Desert Castles of Qasr al-Hallabat and Azraq, the latter being the base for Lawrence of Arabia before he assaulted Damascus.
The King’s Highway has so much history to it, and the scenery to go with it. The crusader castle at Kerak is classic example of an impregnable rock fortress built in 1142 by Payen le Bouteiller. It resisted countless attacks, and was said to light a beacon every night to let Jerusalem know that it had not fallen.
Other highlights on the King’s Highway include the Mosaic town of Madaba, best explored on foot, and Mr Nebo where Moses climbed to look over the Promised Land as is said to be buried. Today it offers stunning scenery and a small basilica.
Dana Village is located just above the Wadi Dana and is a classic example of a traditional Jordanian village. The following day you will walk from Dana to Feynan, about a 5-hour guided walk where you will witness amazing natural beauty. What strikes you about Dana Nature Reserve is its immense tranquillity, you rarely see other travellers and when you get nearer to Feynan there are a number of Bedouin camps where you can stop for a cup of tea before proceeding to the lodge.
Feynan is an Eco Lodge about a 20-minute drive from the nearest road and is lit at night by candles. These two days offer the chance to break away from the usual route of going straight to Petra. The accommodation is simple, yet the experience is magical.
The drive from Feynan to Petra is again breathtaking, and Petra will not disappoint. It is best explored with a guide who will take you to some of the more remote areas of the Petra site.
Wadi Rum is a wonderful mix of sandstone mountains, dunes and sand. You will spend 4 hours on a Four Wheel drive through the desert before watching the sunset in the desert. A night spent at a camp in Wadi Rum is another superb experience.
Your final stop will be the Dead Sea for some rest and relaxation. The setting is impressive, and the sensation of swimming in the Dead Sea is something not easily forgotten.
This is only a guideline, and of course anything can be tailored for your individual requirements.
