Description

This wonderful trip starts in Cochin, one of the most interesting towns in southern India. Set on a series of islands and promontories, the towns narrow streets, colonial architecture, temples and antique shops can be explored for days. It is a strange mix of Portuguese, Dutch and British legancies woven together and bringing huge intrigue to the city.

From Cochin your car will slowly climb the winding roads to the Western Ghats. Set amidst plantations of Cardamom and tea, the Windermere Estate is the perfect base for walks and to experience the peace and solitude. Munnar is home to the highest growing tea in the world and offers stunning views.

You will then drive south towards Thekkady in order to visit the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can see bison, sambar, wild boar, langur, wild elephants and if you are very lucky, Tigers. You can cruise through the large artificial lake created by the British in 1895. Thekkady is home to a range of spice plantations which always make for an interesting visit.

Returning to the plains your journey through the backwaters of Kerala begins. You will stay at the fantastic Serenity where if you so desire, you can spend the day with the hotels resident elephant, Laxmi, walking through the estate. You will then drive to the backwaters and board your private houseboat where you will spend the next 24 hours experiencing beautiful scenery and a way of life unchanged for centuries.

Your journey will culminate on the relaxed sands of Marari beach. Marari is easily accessible from the backwaters and is close to Cochin for your return flight. You may want to consider driving 5 hours to Kovalam where there are a number of fantastic properties suitable for longer stays.
