Description
Located on the banks of the river and surrounded by lush and tropical jungle, Sukau River Lodge is rustic but its location makes it the perfect place to stay and soak up the wonderfully calming atmosphere of Borneo. Spend your days taking boat trips along the surrounding rivers, trek through the jungle where you can spot Orang Utans in the wild as well as proboscis monkeys, macaque red and silver leaf monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles and otters.
The lodge is built from local materials and consists of wooden huts on stilts which are typical to the area. Its twin, en-suite rooms are comfortable and the central dining area and bar face out towards the river and are an idyllic setting in which to relax after a day's exploration.
Please note that a stay here can only be booked through Scott Dunn as part of an itinerary with at least 7 nights accommodation in total.
Accommodation
The lodge's 22 wooden chalets are simple but comfortable and all have en-suite showers with hot water and overhead fans.
Childcare
Children are welcome at Sukau River Lodge and nature lovers will find a stay here a real adventure but there are no specific facilities.
Facilities
There is a main dining area and bar which look out over the river but this is the extent of the lodge's facilities - days are generally spent out and about in the area so the lodge serves as a functional base for a good meal and great night's sleep at the end of a busy day.
Activities
Activities when staying at Sukau River Lodge are extensive and include mangrove river cruises, visits to the oxbow lakes, jungle trekking and guided nature walks. In the evenings there are often slide shows or presentations and the opportunity to take part in evening nature walks looking for nocturnal creatures.
When to travel
Like the rest of Malaysia, Sabah’s climate is hot and humid. Expect temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s throughout the lowlands. The state’s rainfall averages about 300cm annually and though it rains throughout the year, the heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January. At higher elevations the temperature is refreshingly cool, dropping to colder temperatures at night. Mount Kinabalu has its own climate and, above 3500m, temperatures can drop to freezing.
